half marathon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A half marathon is a long distance run over 21.0975 kilometers. This corresponds to exactly half the length of the marathon run .

It is the most common road run based on the marathon distance , but it is not a standard distance at World Athletics Championships or the Olympic Games . Best times have been recorded since the 1970s and half-marathon world championships are held every year . Today it is held in numerous running events and fun runs .

conditions

The half marathon is a popular run for amateurs because it presents a serious challenge without requiring the same training as a marathon. The distance is often offered as part of fun runs.

A fast half marathon places different demands on the human organism than the neighboring disciplines of 10,000 meters and marathons . The 10,000 meter run is run close to the speed with maximum oxygen intake, the marathon, however, below the anaerobic threshold . For a good half marathon runner, on the other hand, a competition of about an hour represents the maximum load at this threshold pace. A less well trained runner who cannot reach such a pace, however, has to stay below his personal threshold pace, otherwise the period in this Load area becomes too long.

At an international level, peak times in half marathons are between 1:00 and 1:05 hours, which corresponds to a pace of 3 minutes per kilometer or 20  km / h .

Half marathon world championships

Half marathon world championships have been held since 1992. They took place annually until 2010, from then on every two years. There is both an individual and a team classification for women and men. In 1992 and 1993 there was also a junior ranking.

The medal winners at the half marathon world championships can be found on the following page: List of medal winners at the half marathon world championships .

Half marathons

Half marathons have been around since the 1970s. Distance became very popular in the 1980s. Today they take place in large numbers. Since the distance mainly attracts recreational runners, these are mostly city runs for a wide audience.

Often the runs do not take place as an independent event, but in direct connection with a marathon. The route is then usually a modification of the marathon route. The start then takes place together with the marathon or in close chronological order. An example of this is the Baden Marathon in Karlsruhe , where all runners complete a half marathon route together and the marathon runners then run another route while the half marathon runners run straight to the finish. Another variant is, for example, that of the Lausanne marathon : the marathon runners run from Lausanne to the starting point of the half marathon; after the marathon runners have passed in La-Tour-de-Peilz , the half marathon begins there.

Occasionally, half marathons are also held on the arena as part of athletics events.

Some examples of regular half marathons are given in the list of half marathons .
