Tamirat Tola ( Amharic ታምራት ቶላ ; born August 11, 1991 ) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who is successful in road running as well as in track and cross-country running .

Athletic career

Tola's first noteworthy international result was his victory in the 2013 Budweis Half Marathon in 1:02:04 h. In the same year he was fourth in 1:01:27 h in the Ústí half marathon . In 2014 he made his debut over the marathon distance in Dubai and finished fourth in 2:06:17 h.

In 2015 Tola won the Ethiopian Cross Country Championships and qualified for the Cross Country World Championships in Guiyang . There he took sixth place in the individual ranking and won the national ranking together with Muktar Edris , Hagos Gebrhiwet and Atsedu Tsegay . At the Yangzhou Jianzhen Half Marathon , he was fifth and increased his best to 1:00:08 h. He also competed in the Berlin Marathon , but could not finish the race. He closed the season with a victory at the BOclassic over 10 kilometers.

At the 2016 Half Marathon World Championships in Cardiff, Tola finished fifth in the individual standings in 1:00:06 hours and, together with Abayneh Ayele and Mule Wasihun, finished second in the team standings. He celebrated his most important success up to then by winning the bronze medal in the 10,000 meter run at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .

On January 20, 2017, Tola won the Dubai Marathon and set a new course record with a time of 2:04:11 h. On April 1st he won the Prague half marathon in 59:37 minutes. At the World Championships in London , he won the silver medal behind Kenyan Geoffrey Kipkorir Kirui in the marathon in 2:09:49 h .

In 2018 Tola increased his personal best as third in the Dubai Marathon to 2:04:06 hours, but lost the course record to his compatriot and winner in 2:04:00 hours Mosinet Geremew . Like many other professionals, he gave up the Boston Marathon in April prematurely because of the adverse weather conditions. At the New York City Marathon in November, he finished fourth in 2:08:30 hours. On New Year's Eve he won the BOClassic for the second time after 2015.

In 2019, Tola finished sixth in the London Marathon , won the Bogotá Half Marathon and finished second in the Great North Run behind six-time winner Mo Farah . At the New York City Marathon he finished fourth, as in the previous year.
