initial situation
The route in London was not that easy, so very fast times were not to be expected. Some top runners such as the Kenyan world record holder Dennis Kipruto Kimetto , the 2016 Olympic medalist Eliud Kipchoge from Kenya, the Ethiopian Feyisa Lilesa and the US American Galen Rupp as well as defending champion Ghirmay Ghebreslassie from Eritrea did not compete. The favorites included Alphonce Simbu from Tanzania, fifth in the 2016 Olympics, Abel Kirui from Kenya, second in 2012 , Munyo Mutai from Uganda, third in the 2015 World Cup, and perhaps also the 2014 Italian European champion Daniele Meucci. In addition, strong performances were to be expected from runners who had not previously appeared in major competitions, especially from Africa.
Race course
August 6, 2017, 10:55 a.m. local time (11:55 a.m. CEST )
For a long time, with a steady pace and changing leaders, no top group could break away from the majority of the field. Only halfway through the course did three runners clear away: the two Kenyans Kirui and Gideon Kipketer and the Ethiopian Tamirat Tola. The pace at the top has now gradually increased. At kilometer 25, Simbu was twelve seconds behind them. Another three seconds behind were Kenyan Daniel Wanjiru and Yohanes Ghebregergis from Eritrea. At thirty kilometers, only two athletes, Kirui and Tola, were ahead. Kipketer was now a little more than twenty seconds behind. Kipketer's lead over the closest pursuers Wanjiru and Simbu was also a good twenty seconds. Other smaller groups of runners were behind them at smaller intervals. They included Ghebregergis, the Turk Kaan Özbilen and the British Callum Hawkins.
In the further course the two leaders Kirui and Tola increased their lead. Behind them, Simbu was able to catch up with Kipketer. Hawkins and Meucci worked their way further forward, while Ghebregergis, Özbilen and Wanjiru now ran together as a group of three, but lost ground. Finally, Tola could no longer follow the pace of leader Kirui and fell back more and more. However, he held his second place ahead of the now single-running Simbu, because Kipketer had to let go and was also passed by the now fourth-placed Hawkins. The Briton had meanwhile been able to shake off Meucci. At forty kilometers, the European champion was sixth behind Kipketer. On the final section after forty kilometers, not much changed in this order. Geoffrey Kirui became world champion in 2:08:27 minutes with a lead of 1:22 minutes over Tamirat Tola, who was able to save his silver medal with just two seconds ahead of third-placed Alphonce Simbu. Callum Hawkins came in fourth with a personal best of 2:10:17 minutes, 26 seconds behind. Daniele Meucci and Gideon Kipketer fought for fifth place on the home straight, which the Italian won with a personal best of 2:10:56 minutes. Yohanes Ghebregergis was seventh ahead of Daniel Wanjiru.
