final

August 5, 2017, 7:26 p.m. local time (8:26 p.m. CEST )

The German Olympic champion from 2016 Christoph Harting was not among the participants. His brother Robert, who was world champion several times in the past and also an Olympic champion in 2012 , was injured and was no longer in the good shape to keep up with the front runners. The favorites included Piotr Małachowski, who is used to success from Poland - including world champion from 2015 , world championship runner-up in 2013 behind Robert Harting and Olympic runner-up in 2016, Belgian vice world champion from 2015 and vice European champion from 2016 Philip Milanov and Estonian Gerd Kanter - including Olympic champion from 2008 and again third in the European Championships in 2016. But Kanter, like Robert Harting, no longer had the great shape of his successful years and Milanov had already been eliminated in the qualification.

There was a changing of the guard in this competition. New names came to the fore, younger athletes won the medals. There were already two long throws in round one. Andrius Gudžius achieved 67.52 m, the American Mason Finley reached 67.07 m. Behind were the Jamaican Fredrick Dacres with 65.62 m and Robert Harting with 65.10 m. In round two the level continued to rise. Gudžius rose to 69.21 m, the Swede Daniel Ståhl threw 69.19 m, Finlay reached 68.03 m. Dacres in fourth improved further to 65.70 m, Malachowski now also overtook Harting with 65.14 m. Pass three brought no changes.

In the last three laps there were no more shifts in position. There were still long throws, but only Dacres could improve on 65.83 m in round four and Malachowski on 65.24 m in round five. However, this had no impact on the placements. Andrius Gudžius became the new world champion with just two centimeters ahead of Daniel Ståhl. Mason Finley won bronze and like Ståhl achieved a new personal best. Fedrick Dacres took fourth place ahead of the "old masters" Piotr Małachowski and Robert Harting. The Pole Robert Urbanek finished seventh, the Jamaican Traves Smikle finished eighth.
