The women's hammer throw at the 2017 World Athletics Championships took place in London , Great Britain , on August 5th and 7th, 2017 .

Polish Anita Włodarczyk became world champion . She won ahead of the Chinese Wang Zheng . Bronze went to Malwina Kopron from Poland .

qualification

69.12 m was not enough for the American Gwen Berry to take part in the finals

The athletes competed in two groups for a qualifying round. The qualification distance required for direct participation in the finals was 71.50 m. Since only nine throwers exceeded this value - highlighted in light blue, the final field was filled with the following best throwers from both groups to twelve athletes - highlighted in light green. After all, 70.33 m had to be achieved to take part in the finals.

The clear favorite was the Polish world record holder Anita Włodarczyk. All major championships in recent years had they decided for themselves - she was Olympic champion 2012 / 2016 , World Champion 2009 / 2013 / 2015 and European Champion 2012 / 2014 / 2016 . Contenders for the other medals were the Chinese Olympic silver medalist from 2016 and Vice World Champion 2015 Zhang Wenxiu, the British Olympic bronze medalist from 2016 and WM -Vierte 2015 Sophie Hitchon and Chinese Wang Zheng as WM -Fünfte of, 2015.

In the first three rounds, the favorite did not make a good throw, after all she was able to qualify for the final of the top eight. Zhang Wenxiu had achieved 74.53 m in the fifth throw and was fourth ahead of Hanna Skydan. Sixth was Joanna Fiodorow, third Polish in this final. Sophie Hitchon ended up in seventh place.
