final

August 9, 2017, 8:25 p.m. local time (9:25 p.m. CEST )

The New Zealander Valerie Adams , who had dominated the shot put for a long time, was no longer there. The reigning world champion and two-time European champion of 2014 / 2016 Christina Schwanitz from Germany was missing because of her pregnancy. The favorites were the US Olympic champion from 2016 and third in the 2015 World Cup, Michelle Carter, the Chinese Gong Lijiao - among other things, vice world champion in 2015 and Olympic runner-up in 2012 - and Hungarian Anita Márton as vice European champion in 2016, Olympic third in 2016 and World Cup -Fourth of 2015.

The big distances did not take place in this competition, so there was no push beyond the 20-meter mark. In the first two rounds, only Lijiao got two shots that were farther than sixteen meters. She led after the third round with 19.35 m. With her third attempt, Carter also surpassed the 19-meter mark. She achieved 19.14 m and was second. Márton and the Jamaican Danniel Thomas-Dodd followed with widths of just under nineteen meters. In lap five, Lijiao rose to 19.94 m and was clearly ahead. Thomas-Dodd now achieved her greatest distance with 18.91 m, which put her on the bronze course. But in the last round, Márton improved to 19.49 m. This meant that the widths of all three medalists were over nineteen meters. Gong Lijiao was world champion ahead of Anita Márton and Michelle Carter. Danniel Thomas-Dodd took fourth place in front of the Chinese Gao Yang and the Canadian Brittany Crew.
