The construction site of the stadium in October 2009

The Olympic Stadium ( English Olympic Stadium ) in London was the venue for the track and field competitions and for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics in 2012 . After a renovation from 2013 to 2016, which was also accompanied by a reduction in the capacity from 80,000 to 60,000 spectators, it is now mainly used as a football stadium with an athletics facility.

The Olympic Stadium was built between 2008 and 2011 in the new Olympic Park (officially today: Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park ) on Marshgate Lane in the Stratford district next to the River Lea . Since the 2016/17 Premier League season , the stadium has been the new home of the West Ham United football club , which was originally located in the Upton Park Stadium ( Boleyn Ground ) on Green Street . The stadium was also the venue for the 2017 World Athletics Championships and the 2017 World Athletics Championships for the Disabled .

The Olympic Stadium will be renamed the London Stadium . A name sponsor is being sought for the stadium.

Project and construction work

After London won the 117th IOC session on July 6, 2005 as the venue for the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics , the design of the future Olympic Stadium was presented on November 7, 2007. According to the planning of the LOCOG organizing committee , it should offer 80,000 seats and be the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies as well as athletics competitions. After the end of the games, according to the original plans, it was to be converted into a pure athletics stadium with 25,000 seats and a sports medicine center.

Construction work began in May 2008. By June 2009, the athletics facility had been dug out of the soft clay soil, surrounded by a “bowl” made of concrete with 25,000 permanent seats. Then the construction of the temporary and removable stands made of lightweight steel and concrete began, on which the other 55,000 seats are located. In addition to the roof, the stadium's facade, which consists of 336 individual panels, is also made of ultra-light polymer . On March 29, 2011, the construction of the Olympic Stadium was completed with the laying of the last piece of turf by former sprinter Frankie Fredericks and middle distance athlete Sebastian Coe . The synthetic membrane for the athletics competitions was not laid until later in the year, otherwise it would have been damaged by the construction machinery during the work. The running track has nine tracks, but only eight of them are used in most competitions. The total cost of construction of the stadium was £ 486 million .

On May 5, 2012, four years after construction began and in 2012 hours before the start of the Olympic Games, the stadium was inaugurated in front of around 40,000 spectators. During the event, which lasted several hours, the President of the Organizing Committee Sebastian Coe and nine-year-old Niamh Clarke-Willis, who lives near the Olympic Park, pressed the button and hundreds of white balloons rose.

The US chemical company Dow Chemical advertised until June 26, 2012 on the outer skin of the stadium, which was made of polyester and polyethylene .

Reuse

On September 30, 2010, the football club West Ham United applied to later use the stadium. He planned to reduce the stadium from 80,000 to 60,000 seats. The athletics facility should be retained because of the 2017 World Athletics Championships . The club was looking for a new venue, as a residential area and shopping center were to be built on the site of its previous Upton Park stadium . The Tottenham Hotspur club also showed interest in the Olympic Stadium. The final decision by LOCOG was scheduled for February 11, 2011, but a day earlier it was leaked that West Ham United had won the bid.

On October 11, 2011, the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) declared the deal with West Ham United failed, which meant that the stadium should go into public ownership after the Olympic Games. It had previously become known that Tottenham Hotspur had filed a lawsuit against West Ham United, alleging corruption .

In December 2011, the subsequent use was put out to tender. A total of 16 interested parties applied to the responsible Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) in response to this tender . West Ham United was again among those interested. Tottenham Hotspur, however, was no longer interested in reapplying; the club has already pushed its own stadium construction plans. The official application process began on March 23, 2012. Four of the 16 interested parties made it into the final selection. In addition to West Ham United , Leyton Orient and the UCFB College of Football Business , a school for football management, the integration of the stadium into a Formula 1 race in London was also discussed.

On 24 January 2013 it was announced that the London Diamond League -Meeting Aviva London Grand Prix 2013 to be held in the Olympic Stadium. The reason given for moving the meeting from the Crystal Palace National Sports Center to the Olympic Stadium was the one-year anniversary of the Olympic Games in London . This was followed by a competition for athletes with disabilities on July 28th.

On March 22, 2013, West Ham United finally announced that the Olympic Stadium would be the club's new venue from the 2016/17 season.

In mid-August 2013, the renovation work began with a view to the Rugby Union World Cup 2015 , including a roof that covers the entire spectator area and was later used for football, other sporting events and concerts. Furthermore, the lower tier has been replaced by mobile stands so that the spectators can sit closer to the edge of the field when playing football. After the Rugby World Cup, further construction work was carried out for the future main user West Ham United. Their Upton Park stadium has been demolished since September 2016, making way for 14 apartment blocks with 838 apartments.

In February 2015 Vinci Stadium , a subsidiary of the French construction company Vinci , became the new operating company of the Olympic Stadium. The contract with the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) and Newham Council runs for 25 years. In addition to the games of West Ham United, athletics and show events are to take place.

West Ham United's license agreement for the stadium runs for 99 years. The association pays 2.2 million euros in rent annually. West Ham United's first game in the stadium after the renovation, which cost 272 million pounds (around 350 million euros), was played on August 4, 2016. In the second leg of the third qualifying round of the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League , the Hammers faced the Slovenian club NK Domžale and won 3-0 in front of 53,914 spectators. The official opening game was played a few days later on August 7th in front of 53,966 visitors. The opponent at the inauguration was the Italian record champions Juventus Turin , who won the game 3-2.

After many spectators stood at their seats during the first two games, the London Stadium Safety Advisory Group has ordered the reduction of the audience capacity to 57,000 for safety reasons. If the situation does not change, the reduction in places will continue. West Ham United then emailed their fans to no longer stand in their seats permanently. The venue experienced its premier in the Premier League on August 21, 2016 when West Ham United played against AFC Bournemouth (1-0).

As it became known in November 2016, the conversion of the Olympic Stadium into a football stadium was significantly more expensive than initially assumed. According to the new figures, the conversion cost £ 323 million, which is a cost increase of £ 51 million. In total, the venue with construction and renovation cost over 800 million pounds (over 950 million euros). In 2013 the figure was still at £ 154 million. Thereafter, the cost increased three times to £ 272 million.

On May 8, 2018, Major League Baseball announced that the Boston Red Sox would play two of their home games of the season against the New York Yankees at London Stadium on June 29 and 30, 2019 . This will be the first time that MLB games will take place in Europe. In the season 2020 is to MLB London Series with the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals will continue. For the 2019 games, the renovation of the interior with over 13,000 square meters of artificial turf from France has been underway since June 6 . The clay for the Pitcher's Mound and the Home Plate Area as well as 345 tons of earth for the infield were brought by ship from the USA. The dismantling should take five days.
