Greenwich Park is one of the royal parks in London . It is located in the London borough of Greenwich . In 1997, Greenwich Park and its buildings were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO .

On the northern edge of the 73 hectare park are the National Maritime Museum and the Queen's House , a former royal palace. On a hill in the middle of the park is the Royal Greenwich Observatory . The small square in front of the observatory is adorned with a statue of General James Wolfe .

From the hill there is a panorama to the north of the former Greenwich Hospital (later the Royal Naval College ), the Thames , the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf , the City of London and the Millennium Dome .

The park has numerous leisure facilities such as a children's playground, a boat lake, a herb garden, a flower garden with a duck pond, a rose garden, a cricket playground, several tennis courts, a music pavilion and a small animal park. South of the park is the Blackheath green area, separated by a wide road . The remains of a Roman temple have been excavated in the park .

The starting area of ​​the annual London Marathon is located in Greenwich Park .

Sports facility

Greenwich Park hosted the 2012 Olympics and 2012 Paralympics . The equestrian competitions as well as the disciplines show jumping and combined (running and shooting) of the modern pentathlon were held here. For this, the park was redesigned in 2012 and temporarily equestrian stadium with 23,000 seats and a cross-country course for the country riding the versatility installed.
