The London Aquatics Center is a water sports arena designed by the architect Zaha Hadid in the London borough of Stratford ( London Borough of Newham ) in the southern part of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park . It hosted the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics . After completion, the hall offered 17,500 spectators.

The hall was opened on July 27, 2011, exactly one year before the opening of the Summer Games. After increasing three times the planned construction cost of £ 75 million , it ended up being around £ 269 million.

The competitions in swimming , synchronized swimming and diving as well as the swimming sub-discipline of the modern pentathlon were held here during the Olympic Games . Swimming competitions were also held here at the Paralympics . The water polo competitions were held in the adjacent Water Polo Arena .

Two 50-meter pools and a 25-meter diving pool were built. The complex is 160 meters long and 80 meters wide. Architectural attention is especially given to the 160 meter long roof, which is shaped like a wave. After the Olympic and Paralympic competitions were over, the hall was reduced to 2,800 seats (plus 1,000 seats for large events) by dismantling the temporary grandstands on the two long sides of the hall. The facility was opened to the public on March 1, 2014 and has since been used by clubs, schools and as a training center.

In July 2013, the swimming pool was selected as the venue for the 2016 European Swimming Championships . An International Swimming League competition will take place in the hall from 23 to 24 October 2019 .
