Horse Guards Parade is a large parade ground in London near Whitehall .

history

The square is open to the west and is adjacent to St. James's Park . The other three sides are bordered by buildings. On the north side is the Old Admiralty Building and the Admiralty Citadel , on the east side Horse Guards , the former headquarters of the British Army , now the headquarters of the Household Division . To the south is the HM Treasury and the rear of 10 Downing Street , the seat of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom .

Originally the area was part of the Palace of Whitehall . However, the square has been used primarily for parades, military shows and other ceremonies since the 17th century. Every year on the official birthday of the monarch in mid-June, Trooping the Color takes place at Horse Guards Parade ; It is also used for other events with military ceremonies, such as the beating retreat .

In the second half of the 20th century, the square was used for a long time as a car parking space for employees of the surrounding ministries. As security measures were tightened, this use was stopped after the IRA attacked the Prime Minister's office with a mortar from a vehicle parked nearby .

There are several monuments on the pebble square, including those of the British Field Marshals Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener , and Frederick Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts .

In 1999 Mike Oldfield gave the premiere concert for his album called Tubular Bells III at Horse Guards Parade .

Beach volleyball competitions were held at Horse Guards Parade during the 2012 Summer Olympics . A temporary stadium for 15,000 spectators was built for this purpose. A good two years later, a stage of the show jumping tournament series Global Champions Tour was held here for the first time in August 2014 , for which a temporary stadium was also built.
