Preliminary and hope round, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals
Small / big finale
mode
The 24 qualified teams were drawn into six groups of four. Group winners and runners-up went straight to the last sixteen, as did the two group thirds with the highest points. The four remaining third in the group eventually played the last two round of 16 players in two play-offs . In the event of a tie, the direct comparison counted. If several teams had the same number of points, the ball point quotient was used.
The other teams were drawn to the six group winners and the two group runners-up with the highest points, although no teams that were in the same preliminary group could meet in the round of 16. The tournament then continued in a knockout system until the final.
96 athletes took part in the competitions, 24 pairs each for women and men. One starting place was always reserved for athletes from the host country. A maximum of two teams per country and gender were allowed to start. The following qualification criteria applied to both sexes.
The first criterion was the FIVB world rankings . All results of the teams at official FIVB tournaments in the period from January 1, 2011 to June 17, 2012 were taken into account in the evaluation for the Olympic qualification. In order to be included in the ranking, the qualifiers had to complete at least twelve tournaments in the given time. The sixteen best couples as of June 18, 2012 qualified for the Olympic tournament. If more than two teams from a NOK were among the top 16, the next ranked team moved up. A further five quota places were awarded for the first time in continental tournament series that took place between June 1, 2010 and June 24, 2012. The winner from each of the five continental associations qualified. If this was also qualified via the world rankings, the next team without qualification moved up. Finally, an international qualifying tournament took place from June 25th to July 1st, 2012, in which every NOK who had not yet achieved two quota places could participate. The two best teams in this tournament qualified for the Olympic tournament.
Teams from a total of fourteen countries had qualified via the world rankings. Germany, like Brazil and the United States, had reached the maximum of two duos per gender.
The tournament mode was criticized. The draw for the final round did not take place until midnight after the end of the group stage, although the next games were already scheduled for the morning hours of the following day. Some games were even brought forward from the original kick-off time of 10 a.m. to 9 a.m., which further shortened the time between the draw and the start of the game. In addition, players in the “ Lucky Loser ” round were asked to return to the field an hour after the end of the game for the next game. Jonas Reckermann, on the other hand, welcomed the fact that he and Julius Brink only had games scheduled every two days.
