Like the tournaments of the ATP Tour and the WTA Tour, the Olympic tournament was played in the knockout process from the first round. The pairings of the first round were drawn. A seeding list prevented the best-placed players in the world rankings from meeting each other early. The winners of the semi-finals played for the gold medal, the losers for the bronze medal. The games were played on two winning sets, only the final in the men's singles on three winning sets. Just like in the previous Olympic Games, the tennis tournament was again part of the ATP / WTA tour, so that world ranking points were also awarded. The World Tennis Federation ( ITF ) tried to get the top players to participate.
The players could achieve the following world ranking points.

qualification
Qualification criteria
190 athletes took part in the competitions. A maximum of six women and six men were allowed to participate per NOK . The ITF was able to allocate up to four quota places by invitation. 64 athletes competed in the singles, 32 couples in the women's and men's doubles and 16 couples in the mixed doubles. In singles, a maximum of four athletes per country and gender were allowed, in doubles a maximum of two pairs per country and gender.
The qualification criteria applied to women and men. 56 of the 64 single starters and 24 of the 32 doubles pairs qualified directly via the world rankings as of June 11, 2012. If more than four athletes or more than two doubles from a country were on said places in the world rankings, athletes moved to the following places accordingly to. The other starting places were also assigned by the world rankings, but taking into account continental minimum quotas and no longer to NOKs who had already qualified athletes. The ITF allocated the starting places for the mixed doubles after the qualification. Only athletes who were also qualified in another competition were allowed to start in mixed. Only athletes who had at least two appearances in a Davis Cup or Fed Cup game between 2009 and 2012 could qualify , whereby one of the appearances had to have taken place in 2011 or 2012.
Qualified athletes
In April 2012, the ITF awarded two quota places for the women's field by invitation to Stephanie Vogt from Liechtenstein, who received a wildcard in 2008 , but could not compete due to an injury, and Verónica Cepede Royg from Paraguay. In contrast to the previous tennis tournaments at the Olympics, there were no tripartite places for the men in 2012, instead these places were generally converted into ITF wildcards.
On June 26th, the ITF announced the list of qualified players. In total, athletes from 45 different NOKs qualified for the Olympic tournaments. The ITF also assigned their wildcards for the various fields. The eight men's wildcards went to Lleyton Hewitt , Malek Jaziri , Serhij Stachowskyj , Adrian Ungur , Vasek Pospisil , Thomaz Bellucci , Somdev Devvarman and Blaž Kavčič . Six wildcards were given for the women; these were given to Alizé Cornet , Anna Tatischwili , Anne Keothavong , Elena Baltacha , Mariana Duque Mariño and Ons Jabeur . In the men's doubles, eight wild cards were given to Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Israel, Japan, Romania, Russia and Slovakia. In the women's doubles, eight nations also received a wildcard: Canada, Taiwan, France, Georgia, India, Ukraine and twice Great Britain. No wildcards were given for the mixed, as this field was made up exclusively of participants from the other fields.
On July 18, 2012, Andrea Petković announced that she would not participate in the Summer Olympics due to injury (double ligament tear in April 2012). Mona Barthel took her place in the singles field , Anna-Lena Grönefeld in doubles for Petković. In addition to Petković, the qualified Aljona Bondarenko , Kaia Kanepi , Petra Martić , Ivo Karlović , Gaël Monfils , Mardy Fish , Philipp Kohlschreiber and Florian Mayer partly also waived due to injury. On July 19, it became known that defending champion Rafael Nadal would not take part in the Olympic tournament. The reason for this gave the Spaniard knee problems that he suffered in his second round defeat at Wimbledon. Feliciano López started for Nadal in singles and Marc López in doubles.
