The defending champion in the singles was the Briton Andy Murray , who made it into the final again this year. There he lost against Novak Đoković in three sets with 7: 5 and 6: 7 11 and 3: 6. Đoković fended off a total of five match points from the Briton in the second set, but was able to use one of his set balls in return. With this victory he secured his 33rd career title on the ATP World Tour . This year it is already his fifth tournament victory. If Roger Federer had been eliminated in the first two rounds, the Serb would have been able to take over the top of the tennis world rankings again. However, Federer reached the semi-finals, which enabled him to tackle his 300th week at the top of the world rankings on October 15, 2012.
In doubles, Max Mirny and Daniel Nestor were the defending champions, but they were eliminated in straight sets against Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna in the quarter-finals . These in turn made it into the final, where they lost to number four seeded duo Leander Paes and Radek Štěpánek . For the Indian-Czech duo it was the fourth joint title in their career. In the current season, it was the third double title for the two after winning the Australian Open and the Miami Masters .
The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 56 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 24 pairs. The eight top seeded players in singles or pairings in doubles each got a bye into the second round.
The qualification took place from October 5th to 7th, 2012. Seven qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament.
At the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2012, the following prize money and world ranking points were paid out or credited for reaching the respective round. Players who entered the main field from qualification received the specified qualification points in addition to those for reaching the respective round. Otherwise the amounts are not to be understood as cumulative. The amounts for the double competition apply per player.
