Leander Adrian Paes (born June 17, 1973 in Calcutta ) is an Indian tennis player . He was number 1 in the doubles world rankings for 39 weeks and, despite his age, is still considered one of the best doubles players in tennis. Paes won a total of 18 Grand Slam titles in doubles and mixed between 1999 and 2016, with each of the four Grand Slam tournaments winning at least once in both doubles and mixed. He also performed particularly well for the Indian Davis Cup team .

Career

In 1990 Paes won the tennis tournament at Wimbledon as a junior , and in 1991 he entered the list of winners of the US Open as such . In 1990 he made his Davis Cup debut against South Korea . At the side of Ramesh Krishnan he achieved remarkable victories in the Davis Cup world group. Also worth mentioning is the dispute in Frejus (near Nice ), when Paes paved the way for India to an unexpected 3-2 win over France with individual wins against Arnaud Boetsch and Henri Leconte . Other world-class players like Jakob Hlasek , Wayne Ferreira , Goran Ivanišević , Jiří Novák or Jan Siemerink had to admit defeat to Paes in the Davis Cup singles. For years he made sure that the Indian team was always close to returning to the world group.

On the ATP Tour he made a name for himself in doubles, especially at the side of his compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi . The "Indian Express" has 26 ATP titles to book. In addition to his single tournament victory ( Newport 1998), Paes has so far won 55 double titles. He celebrated the youngest on September 8, 2013 at the side of the Czech Radek Štěpánek , with whom he won the doubles competition at the US Open - with Štěpánek he had also clinched his last big win on January 28, 2012 at the Australian Open . His career highlight, however, was winning the bronze medal in individual at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. It was the first Olympic medal for India since 1980 - and the first for an individual athlete since 1952 . Paes was elected India's Sportsman of the Year 1996 and was allowed to carry the Indian flag at the opening ceremony of the 2000 Games in Sydney .

In the recent past Paes has also appeared as a mixed partner of Martina Navrátilová , with whom he won the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2003 and was a finalist of the French Open . In 2015 he won his fourth mixed title at Wimbledon alongside Martina Hingis , his eighth overall. This was followed by victories with Hingis at the US Open and the following year at the French Open , with which Paes completed the career grand slam not only in the men's doubles but also in mixed.

After the resignation of Ramesh Krishnan (after the 5-0 defeat in Zwolle against the Netherlands in September 2003) Paes was the Indian Davis Cup captain for a while. He is also the most successful player in his country with 89 wins and at the same time the record player with 52 nominations in the Davis Cup (between 1990 and 2015), in which he was always used. With a three-set win in doubles at Rohan Bopanna's side against China, Leander Paes became the sole record holder for wins in this discipline in the Davis Cup on April 7, 2018.

Awards

Leander Paes received the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 1997 , and in 2001 he was also awarded the Padma Shri . In 2014 he received the next higher award with the Padma Bhushan .
