The Tokyo ATP tournament (officially the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships , previously AIG Japan Open Tennis Championships ) is a Japanese men's tennis tournament . The competition was in 1972, initially organized on carpet later on clay and has since been a year in the district of Chofu in Tokyo held. However, the tournament only became part of the Grand Prix Tennis Circuit in 1973 . It is currently played on hard courts and is part of the ATP Tour 500 . The venue is the Ariake Coliseum in Ariake Tennis no Mori Kōen . In 2018, the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza in Chofu was being played due to renovation work . In parallel, the tournament in Beijing , which belongs to the same category, will take place in the same week .

The record winner is the Swede Stefan Edberg with four successes; In doubles, the American Ken Flach was able to win most often with three titles.
