Brad Gilbert (born August 9, 1961 in Oakland , California ) is a retired American tennis player .

Gilbert started his tennis career in 1982. In the same year he won his first singles title in Taipei . Gilbert won his first double title in Tel Aviv in 1985 . During his career, he won 20 singles and three doubles titles. In January 1990 he reached number 4 in the world rankings. At the 1988 Olympic Games , he won the bronze medal.

Gilbert ended his career in 1995 and has since worked as one of the most successful tennis coaches in the world. Among other things, he supervised Andre Agassi for eight years . During this time, Agassi won six Grand Slam tournaments . The collaboration ended in 2002. Gilbert then worked with Andy Roddick , whom he also led to the 2003 US Open title. The partnership ended in 2004.

His book “Winning Ugly - Mental Warfare in Tennis” is considered one of the best books on the subject of “tennis strategy”. He works as a commentator for ESPN .

In 2006 and until the end of 2007 he coached the young British player and later world number one Andy Murray .
