Andrew Stephen Roddick (born August 30, 1982 in Omaha , Nebraska ) is a retired American tennis player .
Roddick designed his game mainly around his strong forehand, with which he scored many winning strokes. His greatest strength, however, was his serve (a serve of his at 150 mph was the record mark for a long time ).
Until 2004 Roddick was coached by Brad Gilbert , after which he worked with the Davis Cup coach Dean Goldfine. From 2006 to March 2008 he was supervised by Jimmy Connors . In November 2008 he hired Larry Stefanki as a trainer.
Life
Roddick's father, Jerry, is an investor, and his mother, Blanche, is the director of the Andy Roddick Foundation. His brother John runs a tennis academy in Austin , Texas ; the eldest brother Lawrence is also a chiropractor in Austin.
Andy Roddick has been married to former Victoria's Secret model Brooklyn Decker since 2009 .
He made his cinema debut in 2011. In the US comedy My Invented Wife , he played a minor supporting role alongside Adam Sandler , his wife Brooklyn Decker and Jennifer Aniston .
Tennis career
Start of professional career (until 2004)
Roddick began his professional career at the age of 18 in 2000 and ended the year as the youngest player in the ATP top 200 . The following year 2001 he finished in the top 20. In 2003 he won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open . In the same year, Roddick (at the age of 21 years and 2 months) led the world tennis rankings for the first time as the youngest American and as the third youngest player (after Lleyton Hewitt at 20 years and 8 months and Marat Safin at 20 years and 10 months).
In 2004 Roddick joined the US Davis Cup team, with whom he reached the final alongside Mardy Fish and the doubles Bob and Mike Bryan, but then lost to the Spanish team. In 2004 Andy Roddick reached the final at Wimbledon . However, there he had to give in to the Swiss Roger Federer .
The years 2005 and 2006
The year 2005 began for Roddick with a semifinal participation at the Australian Open . A tournament victory at the SAP Open in San José followed shortly thereafter . In the same year he won four more tournaments with victories in Houston, the Queen's Club, Washington and Lyon. He also drew attention to himself at the Grand Prix tournament in Rome, when he corrected an incorrect referee's decision on his own match ball that would have brought him victory and then lost and was eliminated in the third round. This has earned him entry into the management literature; the author speaks of a symbol of integrity and calls the process "Roddick Choice".
2006 didn't start quite as well for him as the previous year. At the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, the Australian Open, he reached the second round. But after a first round at the French Open, Roddick did not get past the third round at Wimbledon, where he had reached the final last year. A tournament victory was also a long time coming. In that year, however, he managed to get his compatriot Jimmy Connors , one of the greatest tennis players of all time, as an advisor to his team.
On August 20, 2006, Roddick beat Juan Carlos Ferrero 6: 3, 6: 4 in the final of Cincinnati (Masters Series) and won his first title of the year. Only a few weeks later, on September 10, 2006, he was in the final of the US Open . In front of his home crowd, however, Roddick once again had to admit defeat to world number one Roger Federer in four sets.
The year 2007
Roddick had a very good start to the season. At the Kooyong Classics, the preparatory tournament for the Australian Open, he defeated Roger Federer in the final. Roddick also started very promisingly in the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. In the third round he defeated the secret favorite Marat Safin in four sets and then the Croatian Mario Ančić, who was 9th . In the semifinals there was a new edition of the final of Kooyong. But what had started out so promisingly turned into a nightmare. Federer, who had not lost a set up to that point, underlined his flawless record and clearly beat Roddick in three sets.
After a moderate clay court season, Roddick won the tournament at the Queen's Club for the fourth time at the start of the lawn season. At Wimbledon he reached the quarterfinals, but lost to Richard Gasquet in five sets. Then in early August Roddick won the Washington tournament. At the Masters in Montreal he was defeated in the quarterfinals to the eventual tournament winner Novak Đoković in two tight sets. A week later, Roddick could not defend the title in Cincinnati (Masters Series), he lost in the round of 16 against the Spaniard David Ferrer 6: 7 (4: 7) and 4: 6. At the US Open he was again defeated by Federer in three sets (6: 7, 6: 7 and 2: 6) in the quarter-finals.
By the end of the year, Roddick achieved one of his greatest goals. Together with James Blake and the world's best players in doubles, Bob and Mike Bryan, he won the Davis Cup with a 4-1 win against defending champions Russia . After Roddick had won his individual against Dmitri Tursunow 6: 4, 6: 4, 6: 2 in front of a home crowd in Portland , he decided not to play again, as the USA were already 3-0 in the lead at this point.
The year 2008
The start of the year did not go as planned for Roddick at first. At the Australian Open he had to admit defeat to the German Philipp Kohlschreiber in five sets in the third round . After a hard-fought success over Jürgen Melzer in the opening match of the Davis Cup duel between Austria and the USA, Roddick was able to win two titles in three tournaments, in San José and in Dubai after victories over Rafael Nadal and Novak Đoković. With two tournament victories by the beginning of March, he had the best start to the season of his career. At the tournament in Dubai, however, he announced the separation from his supervisor Jimmy Connors.
At the following Masters Series tournament in Indian Wells , he failed in his opening game to Tommy Haas . The American was then able to regain his usual form by reaching the semifinals at the Masters Series tournaments in Miami as well as in Rome . In Miami he defeated Roger Federer, against whom he had previously lost eleven times in a row, 7: 6, 4: 6 and 6: 3 in the quarterfinals. However, a shoulder injury threw him back and prevented him from taking part in the French Open.
After failing to defend his title in the Queen's Club (out in the semifinals against Rafael Nadal), Roddick suffered a bitter second round defeat at Wimbledon against the Serb Janko Tipsarević (6: 7, 7: 5, 6: 4, 7: 6). At such an early stage he had never been eliminated from this tournament. In order to be able to prepare for the US Open in peace, he decided not to take part in the Olympic Games in Beijing and instead reached the final in Los Angeles during this time, where he was defeated by the aspiring Argentinian Juan Martín del Potro . At the US Open he finally made it to the quarter-finals, which he lost against number 3 in the world rankings, Novak Đoković, with 2: 6, 3: 6, 6: 3, 6: 7 5 . Shortly afterwards, Roddick managed to win the third title of the season and the 26th title of his career against Dudi Sela in Beijing.
The year 2009
In February 2009, Roddick drew attention to himself by canceling his participation in the ATP tournament in Dubai as the defending champion because the Israeli player Shahar Peer did not receive an entry visa for the Arab country and he was of the opinion “that sport and politics are on do not mix this way ”. At the Australian Open he reached the semifinals, which he lost in three sets against Federer. Shortly thereafter, Roddick defeated Radek Štěpánek 7-5 and 7-5 in the Memphis final, winning the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships for the second time .
In Wimbledon, Roddick fought his way through victories over Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Murray to the final, where he met Federer once again. In a hard-fought and long open match, he finally lost after more than four hours 7: 5, 6: 7, 6: 7, 6: 3 and 14:16.
The year 2010
The year 2010 began for Roddick with the tournament success over Radek Štěpánek in Brisbane. At the Australian Open, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals in a five-set match against Marin Čilić . In February he reached the final in San José and lost there to Fernando Verdasco. In Indian Wells he reached the finals of a Masters tournament for the first time since his victory in Cincinnati in August 2006. However, he was defeated there by Ivan Ljubičić 6: 7, 6: 7. In the Masters in Miami that immediately followed, he reached the final again and defeated Tomáš Berdych 7: 5, 6: 4. He achieved his fifth victory in a tournament in the Masters category and drew level with players like Boris Becker , Gustavo Kuerten and Jim Courier . Following this success, the season turned out alternately: in Roland Garros he achieved the second-best French Open result of his career by reaching the third round, but he had to accept unusually severe setbacks in the grass season. In the Queen's Club he failed in the round of 16 against the Israeli Dudi Sela and the loss of the round of 16 at Wimbledon against the Taiwanese Lu Yen-hsun was one of the biggest surprises of the tournament. In the summer, Roddick was diagnosed with glandular fever , which also forced him to cancel the Masters in Toronto . At the Cincinnati Masters he was able to regain his form, he only failed in the semifinals against Mardy Fish . Shortly before, Roddick was out of the top ten for the first time in four years (and also not an American for the first time since the 1970s). Despite good performance during the North American hard court season, he was eliminated early in the following tournaments, with the second round defeat to Janko Tipsarević at the US Open was probably the bitterest setback. Only in Basel and at the Paris Masters was Roddick able to gain a better foothold again with reaching the semi-finals and quarter-finals. At the end of the season he was back in the top 8, which qualified him for the 2010 ATP World Tour Finals , in which, however, he lost all round robin games.
The year 2011
The 2011 season began for Roddick with a final at the tournament in Brisbane , where he had to admit defeat to the Swede Robin Söderling and so could not defend his title. At the Australian Open , Roddick also fell short of expectations with a second round defeat against Stan Wawrinka . He improved his form at the indoor tournament in Memphis , where he won the title for the third time after 2002 and 2009; in the final he defeated the young Canadian Milos Raonic in a close match . It was Roddick's 30th individual success, making him one of the few active players with at least 30 individual titles alongside Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. At the French Open , Roddick could not compete due to a shoulder injury. At the beginning of the grass season he reached the semi-finals at the ATP tournament in the Queen's Club, before losing to Andy Murray with 3: 6 and 1: 6. At Wimbledon he failed in the third round to Feliciano López . In preparation for the US Open , he reached the semi-finals in Winston-Salem . Nevertheless, Roddick fell out of the top 20 in the world rankings for the first time in ten years. At the US Open he finally had to admit defeat to Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals. At the end of the season, Roddick reached the quarterfinals or the third round of the Masters tournaments in Shanghai and Paris . He finished the calendar year at number 14 in the world.
The year 2012
In contrast to 2011, Roddick only started the season at the Australian Open , where he had to give up in the second round against Lleyton Hewitt due to injury. In February and March he played a total of five hard court tournaments in the United States, but never got past the quarterfinals. Due to a hip injury, he paused until mid-May before taking part in the World Team Cup in Düsseldorf for the USA . He didn't manage to win a single game, all three singles were lost without winning a set. In Roland Garros , he was eliminated in the opening round against Nicolas Mahut . This had happened to him for the last time at a Grand Slam tournament in 2007, also at the French Open. The lawn season was better, however. Although he was eliminated in the first round at the Queen's Club , at the tournament in Eastbourne he reached the final, in which he defeated Andreas Seppi 6: 3 and 6: 2. It was his fifth title on turf and his 31st career title. At Wimbledon, Roddick was defeated by the Spaniard David Ferrer in four sets. Afterwards, however, he was able to celebrate his second title of the season in Atlanta . With 1: 6, 7: 6 2 , 6: 2 he defeated Gilles Müller from Luxembourg in the final .
At the Olympic Games in London Roddick competed in both singles and doubles. With his partner John Isner he was eliminated in the first round against the Brazilians Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares , but in the singles he reached the second round. There he had no chance against Novak Đoković (2: 6, 1: 6). In preparation for the US Open Roddick took part in the tournaments in Cincinnati and Winston-Salem , in which he was eliminated in the first round or reached the second round. On his 30th birthday, he announced at the US Open that he would end his career following the tournament. So he completed his last match on September 5, 2012 in the round of 16 against Juan Martín del Potro, against whom he was eliminated in four sets.
Style of play
Roddick's strengths were his serve, one of the toughest in professional tennis at the time, and his forehand. His game was aimed at quick point wins, mostly from the baseline. Almost all experts considered his volleyball and backhand to be weak points in his game.
