The Indian Wells Masters is a men's tennis tournament held annually in March in Indian Wells , California . It is the first tournament in the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 category in the tournament calendar . Since 1996 it has been held at the same place as the women's tournament . With 96 players in the individual competition, it has become one of the biggest events on the ATP World Tour in recent years ; only the Masters tournament in Miami has an equally large field. The two tournaments are the only ATP tournaments that last longer than a week due to the number of participants; after the four Grand Slam tournaments, they are the largest tennis events in the world.

The games are played over two sets of wins (best of three) . From 1985 to 2001 as well as 2005 and 2006 best of five (three sets of wins) was played in the final .

The official sponsor name of the tournament has been BNP Paribas Open since 2009 . Previous names included Newsweek Champions Cup , Pilot Pen Classic , Congoleum Classic and Pacific Life Open . The venue, the Indian Wells Tennis Garden , is one of the largest tennis facilities in the world; the Center Court seats 16,100 people. Prior to 1987, the tournament was held in other California cities such as La Quinta , Rancho Mirage , Palm Springs and Tucson in Arizona .

Record winners of the tournament are Novak Đoković and Roger Federer with five titles each, followed by Rafael Nadal , Jimmy Connors and Michael Chang with three titles each . The Indian Wells Masters takes place right before the Miami Masters. The two tournaments are also known as the Sunshine Double . Tommy Haas has been the tournament director since 2017 .

The 2020 tournament was canceled due to the corona virus.
