The Miami Masters (officially Miami Open presented by Itaú ), also known as the Miami Open , is a men's tennis tournament that was held on the island of Key Biscayne near Miami in spring until 2018 , before it was held in Miami Gardens from 2019 onwards takes place. The tournament was originally designed by Butch Buchholz to be classified as the fifth Grand Slam tournament ; the idea was a kind of "winter Wimbledon ". These ambitions no longer exist today. In 2000 it was added to the men's tournament calendar as one of the former Super 9 tournaments in the third highest category (after the Grand Slam tournaments and the ATP Finals ); it is now the second of nine Masters Series tournaments in the calendar year.

The venue was the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne , a suburb of Miami. In 2019, the tournament moved to Hard Rock Stadium , the home of the Miami Dolphins ( NFL ), in Miami Gardens . A temporary tennis court with 14,000 seats will be built in the stadium for the tournament. A complete tennis facility with 30 courts, 29 of which are permanently installed, is being built around the Hard Rock Stadium. One reason for the change of location was the failed expansion of the Tennis Center at Crandon Park . The last edition of the tournament in Key Biscayne took place from March 21st to April 1st, 2018.

As the only Masters tournament besides Indian Wells , the immediate predecessor in the tournament calendar, the Miami Masters has a 96 main draw. Winning these two tournaments is also known as a Sunshine Double .

The record winners are Andre Agassi and Novak Đoković with six titles each .

The official name of the tournament was Lipton International Players Championships from 1985 to 1999 , then after the sponsors 2000 and 2001 Ericsson Open , 2002-2006 NASDAQ-100 Open , 2007-2012 Sony Ericsson Open and 2013-2014 Sony Open Tennis . From 2015 to 2019 it was named Miami Open presented by Itaú .
