The Hard Rock Stadium is an American football - stadium in Miami Gardens , north of the US city of Miami in the State of Florida . It's since it opened, the home stadium of the Miami Dolphins ( American Football ) from the NFL and since 2008 the NCAA - college football teams of the Miami Hurricanes of the University of Miami . Until 2011, the MLB's Miami Marlins ( baseball ) were also based in the stadium until they moved to Marlins Park . The facility offers 65,326 seats for football and soccer games.

history

The stadium was built from 1985 to 1987 as Dolphin Stadium . For the first time at a sports stadium, expensive VIP suites were set up to cover part of the construction costs. The first owner of the Dolphins, Joseph "Joe" Robbie, played an important role in the implementation of the ambitious project. In his honor, the arena was called Joe Robbie Stadium from 1987 to 1996 . In the years from 1996 the clothing company Pro Player held the naming rights . After the contract expired in 2005, the stadium was renamed Dolphin Stadium . In May 2009 LandShark Lager, the beer brand of musician Jimmy Buffett , secured the naming rights for the 2009/10 season. On January 31, 2010, the Pro Bowl took place for the first time since 1980 not in Honolulu , but in Miami. Immediately before the Pro Bowl , the stadium got its current name through a five-year contract with Canadian financial company Sun Life Financial . In February 2016, the contract with Sun Life expired and was named New Miami Stadium . This should only be a temporary name. With the completion and the imminent staging of a Super Bowl in the renovated and covered venue, the Dolphins hoped to find a new sponsor for the stadium name by August 2016. On August 17, 2016, the Miami Dolphins announced the new name of the stadium. In the future it will be called Hard Rock Stadium , after the Hard Rock Cafe chain . The agreement between the Dolphins and Hard Rock International runs for 18 years. It was also announced that Real Madrid will play in Miami as part of the 2017 International Champions Cup . Also for 2017 it is planned that the Brazilian national soccer team will play a number of games at the Hard Rock Stadium. Another interested party for the naming rights was the airline Qatar Airways , but many fans threatened to give back their season tickets.

modification

A comprehensive renovation of the stadium began in early 2015. The renovation work includes the complete roofing of the spectator stands in the stadium. The renovation was carried out in two phases. First of all, the grandstands were extended right up to the pitch and the entire tiers were equipped with bucket seats. The equipment was replaced and concrete fixtures completely replaced. In return, the top rows of seats were removed for the later roofing. In the end, the capacity fell from around 76,000 to around 65,000 viewers. The construction phase was completed on time for the start of the 2015 NFL . The first game of the preseason against the Atlanta Falcons (13: 9) took place on August 29th . The second phase with the roof work started after the season and was completed in time for the 2016 season. In every corner of the stadium under the roof of one was HD - video wall , each with an area of 520 m 2 installed and a new sound system and the floodlights renewed. The estimated cost was initially 340 million US dollars . The total has risen to $ 377 million by the end of the first phase.

Around a month before the start of the 2016 NFL season in September, the renovation work on the Dolphins' home was almost complete. On July 29th, the last roof element was lifted into place with crawler cranes . The roof construction with 14,000 t of steel was installed over the stadium in around six months . The roof has an area of 58,000 m 2 , of which 8,800 m 2 are made of translucent ETFE . It is one of the largest stadium roofs of its kind, comparable in size and weight to that of the Stade de France in Saint-Denis . Since Florida is a hurricane area , the roof was designed to withstand hurricane category 4 winds of up to 250 km / h . After the cranes had left the interior, the new lawn ( Paspalum vaginatum ) could be laid. The grass species is widespread on golf courses . It is resilient and grows even in limited sunlight. He was delivered from Alabama in 27 trucks . Despite the tight schedule, the season opening of the Dolphins and the Hurricanes took place as planned. The conversion turned out to be significantly more expensive than initially planned (US $ 350 to 400 million). In the end, the renovation came in at $ 550 million.

tennis

Since 2019, the tennis tournaments Miami Masters (men) and WTA Miami (women) , which have taken place in Key Biscayne, have been taking place in and at the Dolphins' stadium. One reason for the change was the failed expansion of the Tennis Center at Crandon Park . For this purpose, a temporary tennis court with 14,000 seats was built in the Hard Rock Stadium. In and around the football arena a tennis facility with 30 places, 29 of which are permanently installed plus the place in the stadium, was built. In Key Biscayne there were only 21 places. With 50 suites , 26 permanent and 24 temporary, the number almost doubled. The lounge areas and dining rooms for the players as well as the fitness center and the changing rooms offer considerably more space compared to the Tennis Center at Crandon Park. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross invested 53 million US dollars (over 47 million euros) in collaboration with the marketer IMG to build the facility .

As part of the last tournament in Key Biscayne, the first, symbolic, groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 19, 2018 in the Hard Rock Stadium . a. with Serena Williams and Stephen Ross, for the new facility. Floodlights are available on 20 of the 29 courts of the permanent tennis facility, with a total of 6,000 spectator seats . In Key Biscayne, only six of the 21 tennis courts have artificial lighting.

The first tournament at the new location was held from March 18 to 31, 2019.

Soccer

The German national soccer team lost a friendly game against Argentina 1: 2 on December 15, 1993 . Andreas Möller scored the goal for Germany . On February 29, 2012, the Mexicans met Colombia in an international friendly and lost 2-0 goals. In 2013, the Dolphins' stadium was one of 13 venues for the CONCACAF Gold Cup .

As part of the International Champions Cup 2017, two games took place at the Hard Rock Stadium.
