‹  Super Bowl LIII Super Bowl LV  ›

The Super Bowl LIV was the 54th Super Bowl , the final game of the season 2019 of the National Football League (NFL) in American football . The game between the AFC Champion Kansas City Chiefs and the NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers was played on February 2, 2020 from 6:30 p.m. local time (February 3, 0:30 a.m. CET ) at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens .

The Kansas City Chiefs won the title for the second time in 50 years with 31:20 . The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP .

venue

On May 19, 2015, the NFL announced the four finalists who were eligible to host Super Bowl LIII in 2019 or Super Bowl LIV in 2020. The NFL team owners selected the venue on May 24, 2016. The finalists, all in the southern United States , were:

In addition, Los Angeles was also a candidate for the Super Bowl LIV. The Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans , Louisiana , only competed for the Super Bowl LIII. The New Miami Stadium was chosen.

Way to the Super Bowl

With the Kansas City Chiefs , the team with the second best record (12-4, behind the Baltimore Ravens with 14-2) was the regular season champions of the American Football Conference (AFC). In the National Football Conference (NFC), the San Francisco 49ers prevailed as the best team of the regular season (13-3).

The Chiefs moved back into the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years. In Super Bowl IV Kansas City won its only Super Bowl to date against the Minnesota Vikings . The 49ers, on the other hand, have already won five Super Bowls, most recently Super Bowl XXIX of the 1994 season. The last Super Bowl participation in San Francisco was seven years ago, in Super Bowl XLVII they lost to the Baltimore Ravens .

The Kansas City Chiefs were seen as one of the most promising candidates for the Super Bowl before the start of the season , and next to the reigning champions, the New England Patriots , they were given the best chance of a win. In the preseason the Chiefs failed in the AFC Championship Game after overtime due to the Patriots. With their starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes , the Chiefs owned the winner of the preseason NFL Most Valuable Player Award . Compared to the previous year, the previously rather weak defense of the Chiefs had improved. With tight end Travis Kelce , the wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman as well as a stable offensive line, a dangerous offense remains the strength of Kansas City. Six of the team's players were nominated for the Pro Bowl , the NFL's all-star game. The Chiefs were able to secure the title for the fourth time in a row in a weak AFC West . Thanks to the help of the Miami Dolphins , who surprisingly beat last year's champions New England on the last day of the game, the Missouri team was able to secure the second seed in the play-offs and thus had no game in the Wild Card Round.

In the Divisional Round, the Kansas City Chiefs fell 0:24 after a poor start against the Houston Texans . After that, however, Kansas City get six touchdowns in a row, while Houston remained pointless. The Chiefs were already back in the lead at halftime and ultimately won clearly with 51:31. In the AFC Championship Game , the Chiefs met the six seeded Tennessee Titans , who surprisingly had eliminated last year's winner and the best team of the regular season with the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens . Against Tennessee, Kansas City initially fell behind 0:10, but came to a safe 35:24 win and moved into the Super Bowl.

The San Francisco 49ers weren't a Super Bowl favorite ahead of the season. The preseason had ended far from the play-offs after an injury to starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo with four wins and twelve losses. The Niners were only the third team (after the Cincinnati Bengals 1986 and the St. Louis Rams 1999) to come to the Super Bowl after a season with less than five wins in the next season. In addition to the recovered quarterback Garoppolo , an important player joined the team with defensive end Nick Bosa , who was selected second in the 2019 NFL Draft and was voted Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year . In addition to Bosa, San Francisco had a total of four pro bowlers with fullback Kyle Juszczyk , tight end George Kittle and cornerback Richard Sherman . The 49ers were only able to secure the top seed in the conference and thus a game-free week as well as continuous home rights until the Super Bowl on the last day of the game. San Francisco had to win against division rivals Seattle Seahawks . In the event of a defeat, Seattle would have won NFC West instead , which would have dropped San Francisco on the fifth seed and would have had to play away in the Divisional Round. However, they won in a dramatic game 26:21 after the Seahawks were stopped at the 49ers 1-yard line just before the end of the game.

In the play-offs, the San Francisco 49ers managed a clear and safe victory over the Minnesota Vikings in the Divisional Round with 27:10. Even in the NFC Championship Game , the victory of the 49ers was hardly in danger. In the 37:20 win over the Green Bay Packers , especially running back Raheem Mostert stood out with four touchdowns and 220 yards of space. With Mark Nzeocha in the 49ers roster, a German player also reached the Super Bowl.

Play-offs

The play-offs began on January 4th, 2020. The placement of the teams in the respective conference was decided by the result of the regular season . The two teams with the best result from the regular season each had a bye week in the first round and home rights for the rest of the play-offs up to the Super Bowl . The teams in third and fourth position in their conference had home rights in the first play-off game, the Wild Card Round .

Game summary

1st half

The San Francisco 49ers won the coin toss and decided to give the Kansas City Chiefs the first right of attack. In their first attack series after three moves, the Chiefs did not gain 10 yards of space and thus did not make a new first attempt, so they gave possession of the ball to the 49ers with a punt . San Francisco penetrated well into the opposing half, but only scored one field goal by Robbie Gould . Then Kansas City got the ball back and put down a long drive in which they successfully played a 4th down among others . With a 1-Yards touchdown - run by quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the subsequent after Point touchdown of Harrison Butker went the Chiefs with 7: 3 lead.

The Niners lost the ball on their next drive when Chiefs defender Bashaud Breeland intercepted a pass from San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo ( interception ). As a result, the Chiefs advanced to the 49ers' 13-yard line, but couldn't get past a field goal. In return, the 49ers were able to offset their subsequent attack with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Garoppolo to fullback Kyle Juszczyk and the successful extra point from Gould. The Chiefs failed to exploit the next possession and gave San Francisco a chance to take the lead before half-time with 1:08 minutes remaining in the first half. The 49ers came close enough to the opponent's end zone for a field goal with a 42-yard pass from Garoppolo to tight end George Kittle , but since Kittle committed a pass interference , the game was called off and the game went 10:10 into the half-time break.

2nd half

Since the Chiefs attacked first in the first half, the 49ers got the ball first in the second half. With a field goal, San Francisco took the lead with 13:10. The following series of attacks by the Chiefs ended with an interception . 49ers linebacker Fred Warner was able to secure a pass intended for wide receiver Tyreek Hill . After a few moves, running back Raheem Mostert was able to extend the Niners' lead with a touchdown run from the 1-yard line. After the Chiefs' next series of attacks also ended with an interception - Tarvarius Moore intercepted a pass from Mahomes to Hill - a preliminary decision in favor of San Francisco seemed to have been made. After a quick punt by the 49ers, the Chiefs were able to shorten to 17:20 with a 1-yard pass from Mahomes to Travis Kelce 6:13 minutes before the end . The Kansas City Defense then forced a punt from San Francisco after just three plays. The Chiefs managed another touchdown after a pass from Mahomes to running back Damien Williams. San Francisco was now 20:24 behind and needed a touchdown, but lost the ball near the center line with a turnover on downs . Kansas City increased to 31:20 with a 38-yard run from Williams and after the 49ers lost the ball to a bad pass from Garoppolo caught by Kendall Fuller in their final attack , the Chiefs let the remaining time run out.

After the game

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes , who made 26 of 42 passes for 286 yards of space, was voted Super Bowl MVP . He threw two touchdown passes and ran a touchdown himself, thereby making two interceptions . This makes him the youngest quarterback to receive this award. With the win, the Chiefs became the first team to play despite a temporary deficit of 10 points or more in all play-off games (0:24 against the Houston Texans , 7:17 against the Tennessee Titans and 10:20 in the Super Bowl ) won the Super Bowl.
