The Baltimore Ravens are a Baltimore- based American football team that plays in the National Football League (NFL). The Ravens play there in the American Football Conference (AFC), in the Northern Division . In honor of the deceased in Baltimore writer Edgar Allan Poe and his work The Raven (dt. " The Raven ") was the team to its name. The team's mascots were the costumed ravens Edgar, Allan and Poe until the end of the 2008 season. For the 2009 season, Edgar and Allan were replaced by the living ravens Rise and Conquer.
history
The history of the Baltimore Ravens began in Cleveland under the name Cleveland Browns .
1995
On November 6, 1995, the then owner of the Cleveland Browns, Art Modell , announced its intention to move to Baltimore for the 1996 season.
1996 season
On February 9, 1996, today's Ravens were ordered by the NFL to change the so-called franchise . The name Baltimore Colts was then chosen. The name was used earlier by the predecessor team of the Indianapolis Colts . On March 29, 1996 the new name “Baltimore Ravens” was chosen based on Edgar Allan Poe's poem “The Raven” from 1845. However, it took almost two months until the final name was found. In the end, it was the fans who were able to choose from three names in a telephone poll. The choices were Ravens , Americans and Marauders . The vote was conducted in collaboration with The Baltimore Sun newspaper and lasted 24 hours. In those 24 hours, the Sun received a record 33,748 calls , including 22,463 calls to the Ravens name .
2000 season
In the 2000 season, the Ravens finished the regular season with a record of 12 wins to 4 losses. The Ravens defense set a new NFL record that season by allowing only 165 points in 16 regular season games. They reached the play-offs for the first time . Since the rival in the division, the Tennessee Titans , had a record of 13 wins to 3 losses, you first had to compete in the wildcard play-offs. In the first play-off game in history, they clearly won 21: 3 against the Denver Broncos . In the following Divisional Play-off you had to play against the Tennessee Titans and won in the end with 24:10. This was followed by the AFC Championship Game with the Oakland Raiders for a place in the Super Bowl. The Ravens defeated Oakland 16-3. The first move into the play-offs led the team to the Super Bowl XXXV in Tampa Bay , where they met the New York Giants on January 28, 2001 . The team around head coach Brian Billick won, despite their status as underdogs, clearly with 34: 7.
2001 season
The 2001 season was the Ravens' sixth season in the NFL . The season started as the winner of Super Bowl XXXV . However, the season was not a good star, because running back Jamal Lewis suffered a serious knee injury during training camp and was out for the entire season. This fact weakened the Ravens' running game considerably. After the regular season there was still a record of 10 wins and 6 defeats and they reached the wildcard play-offs. Here you could prevail with 20: 3 against the Miami Dolphins , but lost in the divisional play-offs at the Pittsburgh Steelers with 27:10.
2012 season
The 2012 season began with a bereavement when the founder and owner Art Modell died a few days before the start of the season. In the regular season they achieved a record of 10 wins and 6 losses and moved into the wildcard play-offs. The Ravens defeated the Indianapolis Colts 24-9. In the next round, the Divisional Play-offs, they faced the Denver Broncos team and won after extra time with 38:35. On January 20, 2013 , the Ravens were able to qualify for the Super Bowl XLVII with a 28:13 win against the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game . In the final they met the San Francisco 49ers on February 3, 2013 and were able to prevail with 34:31. The Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco has been voted MVP. A special feature was that the coaches of both teams, John Harbaugh and Jim Harbaugh , are brothers.
2013 season
The 2013 season was disappointing and the Ravens ended the regular season with 8 wins and 8 losses. So they missed the play-offs.
2014 season
The Ravens terminated their contract with running back Ray Rice on September 8, 2014 after a video leaked showing him physically abusing his fiancée. Rice has therefore also been banned from the NFL indefinitely.
The regular season went well for the Ravens, with a record of 10 wins and 6 losses they made it into the wildcard play-offs, where they beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 30:17 . In the next round, the Divisional Play-offs, however, they were defeated 31:35 against the New England Patriots.
2015 season
The 2015 season was the Ravens' twentieth season in the NFL and the eighth under coach John Harbaugh. The regular season ended with a record of 5 wins and 11 losses. With this record they reached third place in the AFC North, but they did not qualify for participation in the play-offs.
2016 season
In the 2016 season , the Ravens were able to improve to eight wins, but their defeat in week 16 against division rivals Pittsburg Steelers meant that the play-offs were missed for the second time in a row.
2017 season
For the first time in the history of the franchise, it was not possible to qualify for the play-offs for the third consecutive year in 2017 , although with nine wins out of seven defeats a positive balance was achieved.
2018 season
After the injury-related loss of Joe Flacco in week 9, the Ravens promoted Lamar Jackson, selected at the beginning of the season in 32nd position of the draft, to starting quarterback . Under Jackson, who caused a sensation in particular with his unpredictable runs, a brilliant catch-up succeeded; six wins with only one defeat ensured that the division title could be won for the first time since 2012 (10: 6 balance sheet). In the game against the Los Angeles Chargers Jackson went as the youngest NFL quarterback who had ever played a play-off game, but could not prevent the 17:23 defeat.
On January 11, 2019, Eric DeCosta was promoted to the new General Manager. The current deputy succeeds Ozzie Newsome .

owner
As a result of the announced move of the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore, the team owner Art Modell , the NFL and the two cities agreed that Art Modell would receive a new NFL franchise for Baltimore. The company behind the franchise was renamed from Cleveland Browns Inc. to Baltimore Ravens Inc.
In 1999 aviation entrepreneur Steve Bisciotti acquired 49% of the shares in the Ravens for $ 275 million. Associated with this was the right to purchase the remaining shares for $ 325 million between 2004 and 2006. This option was used in January 2004 and became effective April 9, 2004 after approval by the NFL.
