In 1980 he moved with his family to Palo Alto and graduated from a school there in 1982.

Player career

college

Jim Harbaugh studied from 1983 to 1986 at the University of Michigan , where he played quarterback for the Michigan Wolverines . He was used as a starter in his position in 1984, but broke his arm before the season ended. In the 1985 game round, he led his team to the Fiesta Bowl . The game against the University of Nebraska was won 27-23, making Michigan the second best team in the country. The following year Harbaugh won ten out of twelve games with his team. However, the subsequent Rose Bowl was lost to Arizona State University with 22:15. Harbaugh was named All American and Big Ten Conference Player of the Year after the game round . In the election for the Heisman Trophy , he took third place. During his student days, he threw 31 touchdown passes in 22 interceptions . He could run twelve touchdowns himself. His quarterback rating of 145.6 was a twelve-year record in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

NFL

Chicago Bears

Jim Harbaugh was selected in 1987 by the Chicago Bears in the first round in 26th place in the NFL Draft . He was used by head coach Mike Ditka as a second substitute behind the regular quarterback of the Bears, Jim McMahon , and his representative, Mike Tomczak . It was not until the 1990 season that he was able to prevail against Tomczak as a starter for the team from Chicago . His team won eleven of 16 games in the regular season and thus moved into the play-offs . Harbaugh was not used in the following play-off games of the Bears. In the following season, Harbaugh succeeded again to lead his team into the play-offs. The subsequent wildcard play-off game against the Dallas Cowboys was lost 17:13.

Indianapolis Colts

After the 1993 season, Harbaugh moved to the Indianapolis Colts trained by Ted Marchibroda . Due to an injury, Harbaugh could not fully contest the 1994 season. Nevertheless, the 1995 season was his best season. With a record of nine wins and seven defeats, the Colts narrowly qualified for the play-offs. Harbaugh, who already played brilliantly during the current season and had the best quarterback rating of all NFL quarterbacks with 100.7 , succeeded with the team from Indianapolis in the wild card play-off game of the San Diego Chargers with 35:20 to beat. Harbaugh threw two touchdown passes. The 10: 6 win in the divisional play-off game against the Kansas City Chiefs meant the entry into the AFC Championship Game against the favored Pittsburgh Steelers , who were coached by Bill Cowher . Harbaugh and his teammates managed to keep the game balanced for a long time. The Colts were in the lead with 16:13 until 94 seconds before the end of the game, but ultimately had to admit defeat to the Steelers, led by Neil O'Donnell , with 20:16. The game went down in NFL history as Harbaugh's Near Miracle . Harbaugh's career was marked by injuries even after the 1995 season. In 1996 and 1997 he had to be replaced temporarily by Paul Justin .

More NFL teams

After the 1997 season he was released from the Colts to the Baltimore Ravens , as one intended to tie Peyton Manning to the team. Harbaugh failed to help the Ravens to succeed and moved to the San Diego Chargers after just one year of play. His season in San Diego was also unsuccessful. In 2001 he was under contract with the Detroit Lions and the Carolina Panthers . However, he was no longer appointed to one of the squads and ended his career after that year.

Coaching career

Assistant coach career

During his playing career, Jim Harbaugh volunteered as an assistant coach at Western Kentucky University . In 2002 he was hired by Al Davis as the quarterback coach of the Oakland Raiders . He was in charge of Rich Gannon, among others . The Raiders won twelve games in their first season and beat the New York Jets 30:10 in the divisional play-off game . In the following AFC Championship Game, the Raiders met the Tennessee Titans , supervised by Jeff Fisher . Gannon showed a very good game and threw three touchdown passes, which he contributed decisively to the 41:24 victory of his team. Gannon could not repeat this performance in the Super Bowl . In Super Bowl XXXVII he threw five interceptions and thus enabled the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of coach Jon Gruden to win a safe 48:21 .

Coaching career

University of San Diego

Jim Harbaugh took over the coaching position with the San Diego Toreros , the team of the University of San Diego in 2004 . In the 2005 and 2006 rounds he was able to lead his team to eleven wins each, which meant winning the league championship in both years.

Stanford University

In 2007 he moved to Stanford University as head coach . He moved into the Sun Bowl with the Cardinals in 2009 . His team was defeated there by the University of Oklahoma with just 31:27. His running back Toby Gerhart came second in the Heisman Trophy election after the season . The 2010 season brought the Cardinals eleven wins in one defeat. In the Orange Bowl they faced the team from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University , which were clearly defeated with 40:12. Andrew Luck , quarterback for the Stanford team , was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) after the game . He had thrown four touchdowns in the game.

San Francisco 49ers

The New York Jets were already interested in signing Harbaugh as head coach in 2009 , but ultimately refrained from doing so. Shortly before the end of the 2010 season, the San Francisco 49ers had fired their head coach Mike Singletary , they then replaced him with Jim Harbaugh. Within a very short time, he was able to form the previously unsuccessful 49ers around running back Frank Gore and linebacker Patrick Willis into a top team. With Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick he had two young playmakers at his disposal and with David Akers the team from San Francisco was able to sign one of the best kickers in the NFL. The 13 wins in the 2011 season faced three defeats. Opponents in the divisional play-off game were the New Orleans Saints , who lost to the 49ers 36:32. Ultimately, the team from California had to admit defeat to the later Super Bowl winner New York Giants in overtime with 20:17 in the NFC Championship Game . Harbaugh was able to lead his team into the play-offs in 2012. After eleven wins in the regular season , the team from San Francisco faced the Green Bay Packers in the divisional play-off game . The team around coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers lost to the 49ers with 45:31. The 49ers qualified again for the NFC Championship Game and won against the Atlanta Falcons , supervised by Mike Smith , 28:24. In Super Bowl XLVII, Jim Harbaugh and his 49ers lost to the Baltimore Ravens , his brother John Harbaugh's team , with 34:31. After a disappointing 2014 season, the 49ers split from Jim Harbaugh. Reasons for the separation were disagreements with the management. Harbaugh was very successful in San Francisco, with a record of 49 wins, 22 defeats and one draw (including play-offs ) as well as two NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl .

Outside the field of play

Jim Harbaugh is married with three children. He lives in Palo Alto and is a co-owner of Panther Racing , a racing team from the IndyCar Series . His brother John is the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens .
