Peyton Williams Manning (* 24. March 1976 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is a former American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He played 14 years for the Indianapolis Colts in the National Football League (NFL) and won the Super Bowl XLI with them . He then played for four years for the Denver Broncos , with which he won the Super Bowl 50 in his final season in 2016 .
Career
college
Peyton Manning played college football at the University of Tennessee from 1994 to 1997, where he led the Volunteers to the Championship in the Southeastern Conference with a 30:29 win over the Auburn Tigers in 1997 . This victory brought Tennessee (as No. 3 on the seed list) into the subsequent Orange Bowl . They lost that against the (No. 2 seeded) Nebraska Cornhuskers , who won their third national championship in four years under head coach Tom Osborne with this victory .
After his playing career, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in the first year of his eligibility in 2017 . He follows his father Archie into the hall of fame. This makes the two of them the only father-son duo to be honored in the hall.
NFL
Indianapolis Colts
In 1998 he was selected as the first player by the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL Draft . In his first season for Indianapolis, he threw 26 touchdowns and passes for 3739 yards , setting two new rookie records.
In the 2004 season he set an NFL record: He threw 49 touchdown passes in ten interceptions in the regular season and broke the 20-year-old record of Dan Marino ( Miami Dolphins ).
On January 21, 2007, he and his team made it into the Super Bowl for the first time when the Colts beat the New England Patriots 38:34 in the AFC Championship Game despite being 18 points behind . So he managed to break his " play-off curse" after nine years in the NFL . He eventually led his team to win the Super Bowl XLI and was named a Super Bowl MVP himself .
In the 2009 season, Manning was awarded the NFL Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) for the fourth time and became the sole record holder in this category. He set another record in the same season when he was the first quarterback to throw passes of over 4,000 yards each in ten seasons. He also led his Colts to a total of 23 wins in a row in the regular season, which no quarterback succeeded before him. The second participation in the Super Bowl then ended with a 17:31 defeat against the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV .
From 1998 to 2011 he played for the Colts, which made him the highest paid player in NFL history in 2004 with a $ 99.2 million contract. In July 2011 Manning signed a $ 90 million five-year contract. After Manning had not missed a single game in the NFL by then, he could not be used after an operation on the cervical spine in the 2011 season.
On March 7, 2012, Manning was fired from the Colts, the decisive factor could have been a bonus of $ 28 million, which would have been due in March. At the official press conference it was announced that his number 18 will no longer be used by the Colts.
Denver Broncos
After the Colts fired Manning, several NFL teams expressed interest in his signing, including the Miami Dolphins , Seattle Seahawks , Arizona Cardinals and the Denver Broncos . After meeting a few teams, Manning signed a $ 96 million five-year deal with the Denver Broncos. Manning got "his" number 18 again here, although this should never be awarded again in the Broncos, in honor of the legendary Bronco quarterback Frank Tripucka. However, he personally released the number for Manning.
On September 9, 2012, Manning made his comeback in his Broncos' 31:19 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers . In addition to passes for 253 yards of space gain (with 19 successful passes in 26 attempts), he threw two touchdowns. On November 11, 2012 he succeeded for the sixth time in a row, with a minimum of 20 successful passes, a game with at least 70% successfully leaked passes. That was a new NFL record that he had shared with Brett Favre (five games) until then . Manning finished the regular season with 4,659 yards of space gain with 37 touchdowns in eleven interceptions and led the Broncos as the top-seeded team in the AFC play-offs. There they were subject to the Baltimore Ravens after two extra time with 35:38, with Manning undergoing four ball losses.
After suspending the 2011 season, Manning was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year on February 2, 2013 by members of the press . He prevailed against Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings , who in turn won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award against Manning.
Manning broke several NFL records in the 2013 season. He threw 55 touchdowns in the regular season and got back the best performance from Tom Brady (50). The Patriots quarterback had beaten the then Colts playmaker's record in 2007. Manning also gained 5,477 yards of space, surpassing Drew Brees (5,476). Among them was a seven-touchdown game on Matchday 1 against reigning champions Baltimore Ravens, which Manning set an NFL record. He also played a major role in helping the Broncos become the first NFL team to score more than 600 points.
On the fifth day of the 2014 season he made his 500th touchdown pass in a 41:20 win against the Arizona Cardinals . The only player who has done this before is Brett Favre. On October 19, 2014, Manning made his 509th touchdown pass in the game against the San Francisco 49ers , beating Brett Favre's old NFL record of 508 and becoming the sole record holder. A total of 539 touchdown passes were made. In 2019 he was replaced by Drew Brees as the record holder.
On the eighth day of the 2015 season, Manning set a new record for Favre when he celebrated his 186th career victory with a 29:10 win over the Green Bay Packers . With the Denver Broncos game against the Kansas City Chiefs (13:29) on November 15, 2015 Manning became the sole record holder of thrown yards. Ironically, he achieved this record in his statistically worst match of his career, as he achieved a quarterback rating of 0.0 for the first time with only 35 yards of space and four interceptions and was replaced at 0:22. After the game, it was leaked that Manning had a chronic foot injury. He was then replaced for several games by backup quarterback Brock Osweiler . After Osweiler suffered three ball losses in the last game of the regular season, he was replaced by the recovered Manning, who led the Broncos to a 27:20 win over the San Diego Chargers . In the play-offs, a solid manning with two touchdowns (no interception) helped the Broncos reach Super Bowl 50 . There he won the Super Bowl for the second time on February 8, 2016, becoming the first quarterback to triumph as a starter with two different teams. Then he ended his career.

Private
Peyton Manning is the son of former quarterback of the New Orleans Saints , Archie Manning , and the older brother of former quarterback of the New York Giants , Eli Manning . Manning has been married to his wife Ashley since March 17, 2001. Every summer he runs the Manning Passing Academy with his father and brothers Eli and Cooper. Their goal is to improve the offense skills of quarterbacks, wide receivers , tight ends and running backs . Manning wears jersey number 18 in honor of his older brother Cooper, who had to end his career prematurely due to spinal stenosis . Cooper (wide receiver) is the only non-quarterback in the Manning family.
Meaning of the code word Omaha
Manning used the word Omaha as a cadence very often before starting a play. For example, he used the word 44 times in the 2014 quarter-finals against San Diego and a week later against the New England Patriots 31 times. He explained in an interview that Omaha announced a running game or a passing game or a combination of both. It depends on many factors, including the color of his jersey. Since this word is a secret, complex and constantly changing instruction to his teammates or a recurring scheme, it cannot be clarified what the purpose of "Omaha" is in the course of the game. Among other things, it was also assumed that the word alone had no meaning, but the rhythm. The popularity of the code word Omaha as cadence led to a company initiative in the game Broncos versus Patriots in 2014 that donated $ 800 to the "Peyback Foundation" for every cry. This charity was started by Peyton Manning for children at risk.
