Career

Early years

Murray was born in Bedford , Texas , in 1997 . His father Kevin Murray played football and baseball and was selected in the 1982 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers , but decided after a few minor league games to pursue his football career instead. He played quarterback at Texas A&M University from 1983 to 1986 but never made it into the NFL. His uncle Calvin Murray played in Major League Baseball from 1999 to 2004 .

Kyler Murray attended Allen High School in Allen . With the Eagles he did not lose a single game and ended his high school career with a record of 43 wins, where he ran up in 42 games as starting quarterback and won the state championship three times in a row with the Eagles. In three years in high school, Murray completed 638 of 1007 passes for 10,386 yards and threw 117 touchdowns in 22 interceptions . In addition, he gained 4,139 yards of space in the running game and scored 69 touchdowns.

He was rated a five-star recruit and best dual-threat quarterback in his class. Murray became the first player to take part in both the Under Armor All-America Game and the Under Armor All-America Baseball Game , the high school's two all-star games for football and baseball.

college

Murray first attended Texas A&M University in College Station , where he accrued in eight games. After a season, he decided to move to the University of Oklahoma . Under National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules , Murray had to sit out a year before he was allowed to compete for the Oklahoma Sooners .

In the 2017 season, he played football and baseball for the Sooners. As a football player, he served as a backup for Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield , who was selected as the first player in the 2018 NFL Draft . Murray passed 18 of 21 passes and threw three touchdowns. As a baseball player, he has appeared in 51 games, averaging a batting average of 0.296 on ten home runs and 47 RBI . In the 2018 MLB Draft , Murray was selected ninth by the Oakland Athletics , where he signed a $ 4.66 million contract. His contract with the Athletics allowed him to continue playing college football into the 2018 season. As a result of a strong 2018 season, in which Murray was able to celebrate the championship in the Big 12 Conference as starting quarterback with the Sooners , he was awarded the Heisman Trophy 2018 as the best college football player of the year.

Murray with the Oklahoma Sooners (2018)

Overall, Murray came to college on 350 successful passes with 519 pass attempts and 5,406 yards and 50 thrown touchdowns with 14 interceptions . In January 2019, Murray announced that he wanted to participate in the 2019 NFL Draft and thus focus on a football career.

NFL

In the 2019 NFL Draft , Murray was selected as the overall first by the Arizona Cardinals . The Cardinals' new head coach , Kliff Kingsbury , had already said while serving as college football coach that he would pick Murray first overall. Murray was selected as the first player in both the NFL Draft and the MLB Draft in the first round. In addition, for the first time in an NFL draft in the first round, two quarterbacks from the same university were selected in two consecutive years, after Baker Mayfield was selected as the overall winner last year .

In Arizona, Murray succeeds Josh Rosen , who was selected in 10th place on the draft last year and was originally intended as the new franchise quarterback. After a poor 2018 season , the Cardinals gave up their previous playmaker against a second-round pick to the Miami Dolphins after the selection of Murray .

On his debut in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions , Murray threw two touchdowns and an interception at 308 yards. He led the Cardinals after a temporary deficit of 18 points in the fourth quarter into overtime and a 27:27 draw. After three losses, Murray had his first NFL win in week 5 against the Cincinnati Bengals . In the following 34:33 win against the Atlanta Falcons on Matchday 6, Murray brought 27 of 37 passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns to their goal, and he also scored 32 yards of space in the running game . For his performance in this game, he was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week . Between the game against the Seattle Seahawks on Matchday 4 and the fourth quarter of the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 10, Murray failed to intercept 211 attempts, setting a new record for the most non-interception attempts by a rookie (previously 176 Trials by Derek Carr 2014 and Dak Prescott 2016).

Murray finished his rookie season with 3,722 yards of space gained in passing, 20 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 87.4. He also ran 544 yards and scored four more touchdowns. He was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year .

Play style

With a height of 1.78 m, Murray is unusually short for an NFL quarterback - so far in the Super Bowl era (since 1967) no smaller quarterback has been selected in the first round of the NFL draft. Height is an important factor as the quarterback needs to have a good view of the field of play across the larger players on the offensive line . A size of over 1.90 m is ideal. On the other hand, there are Murray's athleticism and agility, which, in addition to his skills as a passing player, also pose a threat to the opposing defense in the running game . After his first NFL games, his deep passes in particular were rated as one of his strengths. His weaknesses are in particular his lack of efficiency in the red zone (the 20 yards in front of the opponent's end zone ) and his behavior in the pocket , which means he has to take too many sacks .
