Joseph Lee "Joe" Burrow (* 10. December 1996 in Ames , Iowa ) is an American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . In the 2020 NFL Draft , he was selected as the overall first by the Cincinnati Bengals . He played college football for the Ohio State Buckeyes and the LSU Tigers . In the 2019 season he won the Heisman Trophy for best college football player as well as the national championship with the Tigers, the College Football Playoff National Championship Game .

Early years

Joe Burrow's father, Jim Burrow, played college football for the University of Mississippi and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln . As a cornerback , he played three games for the Green Bay Packers in the National Football League (NFL) in 1976 before playing in the Canadian Football League (CFL), where he won the Gray Cup with the Montreal Alouettes . He also played in the CFL for the Calgary Stampeders and the Ottawa Rough Riders . He then worked as a coach in college football for decades, most recently from 2005 to 2018 as a defensive coordinator for Ohio University . Joe Burrow was born in Ames , Iowa and raised in Athens , Ohio . He attended Athens High School in nearby The Plains from autumn 2011 . In addition to football, he also played baseball and basketball there . At high school Burrow threw 11,416 yards for 157 touchdowns , he also scored 2,067 yards of space and 27 touchdowns by running play . In his last two years of high school, he got over 70 percent of his passports to their destinations. He not only played as a quarterback, but also in defense as a cornerback.

He won the Ohio Mr. Football Award for the best high school football player in his state in 2014. He was rated by 247Sports as a four-star recruit, i.e. one of the top 300 players of his year.

college

From 2015, Burrow went to Ohio State University . There he played for the Ohio State Buckeyes , where he was mostly the backup behind JT Barrett. In a total of 10 games, Burrow threw only 39 passes, in which he scored two touchdowns. After Barrett left college, the place of the starting quarterback was vacant, but next to Burrow, the later first-round pick Dwayne Haskins was in the Buckeyes' squad. Burrow therefore decided to move to Louisiana State University . Since he had already graduated in Ohio, he was immediately eligible to play for LSU and was appointed starting quarterback there.

There he set a new record at his college for the most pass attempts without interception right from the start (158) and led the Tigers to their first season with 10 wins (from 13 games) since 2013. In the Fiesta Bowl , which the LSU Tigers with Winning 40:32 against the UCF Knights , he was named the Offensive MVP. Overall, Burrow threw in his first season for Louisiana State for 2,894 yards of space gain with 16 touchdowns and 5 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 133.2.

In the 2019 season, Burrow was able to significantly increase his performance in a completely redesigned offensive system and became one of the most frequently mentioned candidates for the Heisman Trophy and the election as the overall first in the NFL Draft 2020. In particular, on the ninth game day he was able to beat the Alabama Crimson Tide , besides the LSU Tigers one of the best teams of the season, convince. The Tigers won 46:41 after losing their last eight games to Alabama. In the election for the Heisman Trophy , Burrow clearly prevailed against the quarterbacks Jalen Hurts ( Oklahoma ) and Justin Fields ( Ohio State ) and the defensive end Chase Young (Ohio State). Burrow received 90.7 percent of all votes and won with a record lead. Previously, Troy Smith had won the election most clearly in 2006 with 86.7%. In the 2019 Peach Bowl , the semifinal game of the College Football Playoff National Championship Game against the Oklahoma Sooners , Burrow threw seven touchdown passes in the Tigers' 63:28 win in the first half. In the 2020 NFL Draft , as had previously been expected, Burrow was selected as the overall first by the Cincinnati Bengals . In Cincinnati Burrow follows Andy Dalton , who was dismissed after nine years as starting quarterback for the Bengals following the draft.
