JaMarcus Russell (* 9. August 1985 in Mobile , Alabama ) is a former American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . The 1.98 meter tall Russell played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Oakland Raiders . He was selected as the first player in the first round in the 2007 NFL Draft , but completed only 31 games in the NFL due to weight and drug problems.

college

Russell was considered a great talent during his college days at Louisiana State University and won the Manning Award for Best College Quarterback in 2006 . NFL scouts were particularly impressed by his combination of physical strength and throwing power, which was reminiscent of Daunte Culpepper .

NFL

The Oakland Raiders from Head Coach Lane Kiffin selected Russell as the first player in the 2007 NFL Draft , but Russell initially refused to sign a contract: he successfully played poker for more money, but also missed the training camp and was therefore not a starting point - Quarterback used. In his first season, Russell made only four games (one as a starter) and threw two touchdowns , but also made four interceptions .

In his second season in 2008, Russell was named starting quarterback. He threw thirteen touchdowns at eight interceptions, gained 2,423 yards of space, and achieved a quarterback rating of 77.1. The Raiders only won five games of the season.

2009 was disastrous for Russell: after nine games in which he threw only three touchdowns (eleven interceptions), his quarterback rating sank to 50.0 and he was booed by his own fans, he was initially through by the new head coach Tom Cable Bruce Gradkowski was replaced as regular quarterback and even by Charlie Frye as reserve quarterback. Above all, Russell's “lack of work ethic and larifarial preparation” was criticized. Tom Cable sent Russell some "DVDs of the last Raiders games" as a test and later asked him if he had watched them. When Russell told him he had "learned a lot," Cable revealed that the DVDs were blank: he just wanted to test it and knew that Russell had lied.

During the summer break of the 2010 season, Russell appeared "extremely overweight". In addition, critics pointed out that he seemed to have little interest in learning the new moves of the Raiders and hardly talked to his teammates. Russell was kicked out of the roster by the Raiders, making him the number 1 draft pick most quickly fired by his team.

In July 2010, Russell, now without a club, was caught drinking the codein-containing party drug purple . Russell was unable to convince in either the Washington Redskins or the Miami Dolphins trial training , and in the spring of 2011 his motivational speaker announced that he had given up his collaboration with the "incredibly talented but completely impotent" Russell. NFL.com called Russell the "worst draft pick in NFL history, even worse than Ryan Leaf ."

Private life

Russell is the son of Zina and Bobby Russell, a secretary and a machinist. When Hurricane Katrina destroyed larger parts of Louisiana, the then LSU student accommodated twenty people (including Fats Domino , the grandfather of his girlfriend at the time) in his student apartment.

In March 2011 it was announced that Russell was suffering from "massive financial problems" and that Russell, who had reached $ 60 million after signing his NFL contract, was unable to pay a "$ 195,000" mortgage .
