Purple drank

The result is a “ syrup-like drink that smells pervasively of medicine with an intense, characteristic purple color”, which it receives from the cough syrup content.

The main active ingredients of purple drank are the codeine and promethazine contained in the cough syrup or tablets : it creates euphoria and a positive feeling of numbness , which is expressed in the slowing down and impairment of motor skills .
history
Purple drank was invented in Texas in the 1960s as an inexpensive and easy-to-make party drink. At the end of the 1990s, Houston- born disc jockey DJ Screw purple popularized the so-called screw rhythms as a drink to go with his slow, narcosis-like hip-hop style . As this style became popular, purple drank made its way into the southern states and local hip-hop scenes. In 2004, 8.3 percent of all high school students in Texas said they had experience with purple drank . Known for his purple drink consumption, rapper Big Moe brought u. a. two albums with the relevant names City of Syrup and Purple World . German-speaking rappers such as Bonez MC , RAF Camora , Ufo361 , Gzuz , Money Boy , Hustensaft Jüngling , Bausa and Lil Lano also mention their use of the drug in their texts.
Typically, purple drank is drunk from white styrofoam cups. When used in the purple drank , a pint of the prescription cough syrup fetched up to $ 350 on the black market .
Risks
Codeine acts on the central nervous system and leads to respiratory depression if overdosed . DJ Screw died in 2000 of an overdose of purple drank , as did Big Moe and his colleague Pimp C (both † 2007). Other risks include constipation , tooth decay , urinary problems, and weight gain. The rapper Lil Wayne , who openly admits to the consumption of purple , warns of withdrawal symptoms such as "severe stomach cramps with hellish pain".
Since codeine is on various doping lists in competitive sports , purple-drank consumption can lead to a doping case. Prominent cases from American football concern the National Football League players JaMarcus Russell , Terrence Kiel and Johnny Jolly .
Since prescription cough syrup is used to make purple drank , illegal dealing has become a problem: in 2010 a doctor was arrested for trafficking in counterfeit codeine prescriptions valued at approximately $ 100,000.
