Pimp C (born December 29, 1973 in Port Arthur , Texas , † December 4, 2007 in West Hollywood , California ; actually Chad Butler ) was an American rapper and hip-hop producer from the southern United States . He was also known under the pseudonyms Sweet James Jones, Tony Snow and Mick Jagga.

biography

Together with Bun B , also from Port Arthur, the rapper has formed the hip-hop group UGK since 1987 . In 1988 Pimp C and Bun B released their first album, The Southern Way , as UGK. It was released on the Bigtyme Recordz label . Four years later, the two rappers signed a five-album deal with Jive Records .

On January 28, 2002, Pimp C was sentenced to eight years in prison for, among other things, grievous bodily harm. At the trial he was charged with possessing a weapon. Commenting on the incidents in an interview, Pimp C stated that he showed his gun to a woman in a mall. This is synonymous with grievous bodily harm in the state of Texas. In the course of the negotiations, Pimp C said, the judge in charge wanted information on J. Prince, the chief executive officer of Rap-A-Lot Records . Since Pimp C refused to testify, he did not receive any mitigation during the trial.

Pimp C spent the first year of his sentence in County Jail . In December 2002 the rapper was transferred to the Huntsville Unit . In March 2005, Pimp C released his debut album Sweet James Jones Stories on the Rap-A-Lot Records label . At the time of publication, the Texan was still in custody. The album contains previously unreleased material by the rapper and was marketed through the Free Pimp C campaign initiated by Rap-A-Lot and Bun B. The release of the rapper from the Terrell Prison Unit in Livingston (Texas) took place on December 30, 2005; his probationary period would have ended in December 2009. According to his own statement, Pimp C wrote 3,000 songs during his prison sentence.

On July 11, 2006, the second solo project Pimpalation des Rappers was published. The album was released on Rap-A-Lot Records and contains guest contributions from Mike Jones , Jazze Pha , Lil Keke , Trae , Chamillionaire and Bun B. The manager of Pimp C was his mother. The rapper was the owner of the Trill Entertainment label , which is a sub-label of the Warner Music Group . Hip-hop artists Webbie, Lil 'Boosie, 3 Deep, Big Head, Foxx and producer Mouse are under contract on the record label that Pimp C ran with Bun B. After release Pimp C founded the label along with Bun B UGK Records . The rappers first published mixtapes of the hip-hop groups Mddl Fngz and V12 Boyz through this. The line of the label took Pimp C. In 2007 published Pimp C along with Bun B album Underground Kingz . With this, the duo managed to occupy number 1 in the US charts for the first time.

On the morning of December 4, 2007, Pimp C was found dead at the Mondrian Hotel in West Hollywood. The cause of death was an unwanted overdose of codeine , presumably after consuming the codeine- containing party drug purple . Pimp C also suffered from sleep apnea syndrome . The interaction of the two factors led to the rapper's death. Two days after his death, UGK was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Rap by a Duo or Group . The duo was unable to win a prize at the Grammy Awards, but Pimp C received an obituary notice that was displayed at the end of the award ceremony.

The rapper's funeral took place on December 13, 2007 at the Bob Bowers Civic Center in Port Arthur. Prominent musicians such as Bun B, Chamillionaire and Mike Jones took part in the ceremony. Pimp C's estate is administered by his wife. This now also continues the business of the UGK Records label . On June 3, 2008, Pimp C's Best Of album Greatest Hits was released via Asylum / Warner .

In early October 2010 a posthumous solo album by Pimp C was released under the title The Naked Soul of Sweet Jones via Rap-A-Lot Records / Fontana Records . Bun B stated that Pimp C had made numerous recordings that Bun B used before his death to create new songs.

The last published work, Still Pimping , was released via Rap-A-Lot Records in July 2011.

Macklemore addresses the death of Pimp C through drug use on his 2014 album For My People in the song The Otha Side .
