Tales from the Twilight World is the third studio album by the German metal band Blind Guardian . It was recorded and published in 1990.

Emergence

Tales from the Twilight World was the band's first album in which the artist Andreas Marschall drew the artwork for the cover. The producer of the album was like on the two previous albums and on the follow-up album Kalle Trapp, the recordings took place again in April and May 1990 in the Karo Studios in Hamburg. Kai Hansen from Gamma Ray was involved in the recordings as a guest musician , who contributed a guitar solo to the song The Last Candle and sang a few passages in Lost in the Twilight Hall . Additionally, there were Piet Sielck of the band Iron Savior as well as with different studio engineers included Kalle Trapp as a background singer.

Music genre

Stylistically, this album marks the temporary end of the band's early phase, which was characterized by speed / thrash metal . Characteristic guitar breaks , polyphonic choral singing and tempo changes were increasingly used, just as the band now put forward slower pieces or ballads. Nevertheless, there are also numerous borrowings from the previous albums, which means high tempo and rather simple riffs in the verses of the songs. The overall tendency of the musical development, however, rather pointed the way to the musically strong follow-up albums Somewhere Far Beyond (1992) and Imaginations from the Other Side (1995).

Fantasy and science fiction literature in particular formed the basis for the lyrics on the album. The song " Traveler in Time " processes the SF novels of the Dune series by Frank Herbert . " Tommyknockers " and " Altair 4 " are based on Stephen King's novel Das Monstrum (English: The Tommyknockers ). With " Lord of the Rings " is JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings processed, which should evolve in the following years into a major issue. In addition to the literary works, a film will also be translated into text, namely ET - The Extra-Terrestrial in the song " Goodbye My Friend " .

Effect and reception

The reviews of the album were consistently good to very good after the previous album, which was criticized as unspectacular. In 2001, Rock Hard magazine was the only work by the band to include the album in its Top 300 list .

The songs on the album have been part of the band's live repertoire since it was released. On the recorded through 1992 in Japan Tokyo Tales - live album were four songs of the album, more than from the currently active at this time Somewhere Far Beyond album. On the live double album Live , released in 2003, the program also included Welcome to Dying , Lost in the Twilight Hall and Lord of the Rings .

The 1996 compilation The Forgotten Tales contained a version of the song Lord of the Rings that was designated as an orchestral version .
