The Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein is the state archive of the federal state Schleswig-Holstein . The seat is in Schleswig . Today it is located in the building of the historic Prinzenpalais . Its predecessors were the Prussian State Archives Schleswig (1870–1923) and the Prussian State Archives Kiel (1923–1947).

history

After the creation of the province of Schleswig-Holstein , a state archive was set up there, as in all Prussian provinces. It was founded in 1870 and had its seat in the then provincial capital Schleswig.

In 1922/1923 the State Archives were relocated to Kiel , where the new official residence of the Provincial President was now . In addition, the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel advocated the move as part of the establishment of a chair for regional history. The archive was housed in a former naval depot on Karlstrasse. In April 1945 the building was destroyed in an air raid. However, the archive material had previously been relocated and could be transferred to Schleswig.

From 1947, the institution, now called the State Archives, had its headquarters in Gottorf Castle . Since the spatial situation was not satisfactory, the state acquired the Prinzenpalais in Schleswig in 1979 , which was renovated in the following years. In addition, an adjacent functional building for the library, reading room and office was built. In 1991 the official inauguration of the new headquarters of the State Archives took place.

Archival material

The archives include archival material from the pre-Prussian period (until 1867) relating to the whole of Schleswig-Holstein as well as the three duchies of Schleswig , Holstein and Lauenburg as well as the principality of Lübeck and the districts as far as the archives did not reach the Imperial Archives in Copenhagen . The documents and files of the Schleswig-Holstein estates and monasteries also date from this time. The archives of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck , on the other hand, are located in the archive of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck as its former state archive.

From the period from 1867 to National Socialism, the state archive manages archives for the Lübeck region (until 1937) and the Prussian administration of the Schleswig-Holstein province (until 1946).

Archives holdings of the Schleswig-Holstein judicial authorities exist from the period after 1867. Archives are also managed by the Schleswig-Holstein operating offices of the Reich and Federal Administration (including the postal , rail and weather systems ) from 1871 onwards.

From the time of National Socialism and the occupation (1933–1949) there is a department for denazification . Four further departments (including via the Schleswig-Holstein Gauleitung of the NSDAP or the Sub Area Intelligence Office of the British military government ) are being set up (as of 2012).

The state archive houses the files and documents of the state administration of the federal state Schleswig-Holstein from the post-war period . Archives of the local authorities are in the various district and city archives.

There are special archives of the State Archives for various non-governmental collection areas. These include collections from the Society for Schleswig-Holstein History and the Schleswig-Holstein Federation . The state archive is also the film and map archive of Schleswig-Holstein.

Other individual holdings come from various bequests , including from private individuals.

Library

The archive has a reference library with around 150,000 volumes, mainly on the history, cultural history and regional studies of Schleswig-Holstein, as well as publications on all research areas of history, its auxiliary sciences and related disciplines such as folklore or legal history. This also includes part of the library of the Schleswig Cathedral School , which was founded in 1307 and is the oldest scholarly school in the state. The majority of the library holdings can be found in the online catalog of the Joint Library Network (GBV). The books can be viewed in the reading room of the State Archives.
