Gottfried Ernst Hoffmann

Gottfried Ernst Hoffmann (born February 19, 1898 in Niedercunnersdorf ; † March 1, 1978 in Schleswig ) was a German archivist . From 1938 to 1945 he was State Archives Director in Kiel and from 1950 to 1963 Director of the Schleswig-Holstein State Archives in Schleswig.

Life

Hoffmann was the son of a factory owner. He studied German, history, Latin and theology in Munich from 1916 to 1917 and in Leipzig from 1918 to 1921 . In 1922 he received his doctorate in Erlangen with a dissertation on Gregor von Tours . In 1924 he worked as a trainee at the Secret State Archives in Berlin and passed the archivist examination there the following year.

In 1926 Hoffmann began to work for the State Archives in Kiel, where he rose from scientific assistant to archive assistant (1927), state archivist (1929) to state archive director and board member (1938). He also taught from 1935 to 1942 as an honorary professor for family studies at the University of Kiel and from 1942 to 1945 as an honorary professor for historical auxiliary sciences in Kiel. Hoffmann was a member of the NSDAP from 1933 (membership number: 2730185) and was a member of the SA from 1934 .

After the Second World War, Hoffmann was dismissed by the military government. From 1945 to 1947 he worked for a business publishing house in Kiel. In 1949 he was hired again, initially as an employee in the Schleswig-Holstein State Archives in Schleswig, and in the following year he became State Archives Director there. In 1963 he retired.

Hoffmann was married and had six children.
