Wolfgang Prange

Wolfgang Prange (born May 5, 1932 in Lübeck ; † February 15, 2018 in Schleswig ) was a German historian and archivist .

His father was Max Prange, who had a doctorate in geography and was senior director of studies. In 1923 he married Ilse Cartellieri, the daughter of the historian Alexander Cartellieri . Wolfgang Prange grew up in Eutin . In March 1952 he passed the school leaving examination at the Johann Heinrich Voss School . From 1952 to 1958 he studied history, prehistory and early history and German at the Universities of Kiel and Freiburg . In Kiel he passed the state examination for teaching at grammar schools. He received his doctorate with a thesis on the settlement history of the state of Lauenburg in the Middle Ages, supervised by Karl Jordan and Herbert Jankuhn . For this work he received the faculty award of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel in 1957/58. He passed the state examination for teaching at secondary schools in the winter semester of 1958/59. In 1958, with funding from the German Research Foundation, he researched the beginnings of Schleswig-Holstein's agricultural reforms. From 1959 to 1997 he was employed at the Schleswig-Holstein State Archives , since 1959 as an archivist trainee, in 1964 he became archivist, 1969 senior archivist, 1972 archives director and from 1974 to 1984 chief archives director. At his own request, he decided to give up this position on May 2, 1984 in order to be primarily responsible for research and editing as archive director. He was succeeded by Reimer Witt . He took up a teaching position at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and became an honorary professor there in 1980 .

His main research interests were national and legal history. Prange is the author of a large number of publications on the regional and early history of Schleswig-Holstein. He published well over 200 papers. His whole research life was concerned with the history of the diocese and the bishopric of Lübeck . His first essays were published in 1958 in the Lauenburg homeland . After twelve years of work, in 1971 he published a groundbreaking study of the beginnings of the great agricultural reforms in Schleswig-Holstein in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1972 he edited the Lübeck tithe register. From volume 6 he was the editor of the Schleswig-Holstein registers and documents . In 2016 he published the 17th volume of the Schleswig-Holsteinische Regesten und Urkunden with the edition of the minutes of the Lübeck Cathedral Chapter from 1544 to 1549. He continued the document book of the Diocese of Lübeck started by Wilhelm Leverkus and was the editor of the document book of the Diocese of Lübeck for the years from 1220 to 1530. From 1977 to 1990 he was editor of the journal of the Society for Schleswig-Holstein History and the series of sources and research on the history of Schleswig-Holstein .

Prange had been married to a doctor of history since 1959.
