Drake (2017)

Aubrey Drake Graham (* 24. October 1986 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian rapper , R & B - singer and former actor . He publishes his songs under his intermediate name Drake , although he is also known under his pseudonym Drizzy .

Childhood and youth

Drake was born as Aubrey Drake Graham in 1986 in Toronto in the Canadian province of Ontario . He is the son of a Canadian and an American and has both Canadian and United States citizenship . His father, the African-American musician Dennis Graham, is from Memphis in the US state of Tennessee and is a supporter of the Catholic Church . He worked as a drummer for the musician Jerry Lee Lewis , among others . He is the brother of Larry Graham , who became known as the bass player for the funk band Sly & the Family Stone . Drake's mother, Sandi Graham (née Sher), is a white Jewish Canadian who worked as an educator and florist .

His parents divorced when Drake was five years old. After his father moved to Memphis in the United States, Drake grew up in simple circumstances with his mother in Toronto. He lived there in the West End migrant district before moving with his mother in 2000 to the affluent Forest Hill district of Old Toronto , which is dominated by a large Jewish population . There Graham attended the Forest Hill Collegiate Institute before moving to the Vaughan Road Academy. However, due to his acting career, he dropped out of high school .

Drake was raised Jewish by his mother and celebrated his bar mitzvah at the age of thirteen . In retrospect, he described his school days as unhappy, as he was often a victim of bullying because of his beliefs and skin color and was not accepted by his wealthy classmates because of his low social status.

Career

At the age of 15, Graham was discovered by the father of a high school friend who worked as an acting agent. Graham first became famous as an actor in the youth series Degrassi: The Next Generation , in which he played the character Jimmy Brooks from 2001 . In 2006 he also appeared as a rapper when he released a series of mixtapes . His first success as a musician was the single Replacement Girl , which he recorded together with Trey Songz and which was presented by the TV channel BET in its show 106 & Park as Joint of the Day (in German: Song of the day ). Despite appearances on numerous mixtapes and remixes and the support of Kanye West , Jay-Z and Lil Wayne  , he remained without a record deal. In 2009 he released the single Best I Ever Had , which became a hit in the United States. As a result, a bidding competition developed between several major labels , at the end of which there was finally a cooperation agreement between Cash Money Records and Young Money Entertainment . Universal Records serves as the distribution label . Drake is known for its unique mix of hip hop and R&B .
