What's my name? is a song by the Barbadian singer Rihanna in a duet with the Canadian rapper Drake . It was designed by Ester Dean , Stargate and Tracy Hale written and Stargate produced . The song was released on October 29, 2010 as the second single from Rihanna's fifth album Loud .

background

Rihanna sings "What's My Name?" On her Loud Tour in Sunrise , Florida on July 14, 2011.

Drake's involvement in the play goes back to a direct request from Rihanna. An article in Billboard magazine said: "Drake is the hottest rapper out right now and we've always been trying to work together," she [Rihanna] said. “He's the only person I thought could really understand the melody of the song, and the minute he heard it he said, 'I know exactly what I'm going to do. I love it. ' And he did it like three days later. "

The song was written by the Norwegian producer duo Stargate, Ester Dean , Traci Hale and Aubrey Graham and deals with topics such as "sex and romance". In an interview with HitQuarters, Hale stated that Dean took care of the melody. Dean brought Hale into the process, including helping to write the lyrics to What's My Name? and other songs in the album Loud . In the interview, Hale said: “My contribution was mostly lyrical, Ester did most of the melody. It's really group effort though - so it's hard to say the formula on some songs because Stargate does their part, Ester does her part, I put in what I put in - no one does just one thing. "On the inspiration of the song, Hale said: "Oh love, love, love! And it's sexy - it started as a real sexy track and then you put something sexy over it. ”With the success of the song, Hale's career as a songwriter began.

Music video

Rihanna shot the music video on September 26, 2010 in the streets of New York City . Philip Andelman directed it. The scenes with Drake were filmed on October 27, 2010.

The music video premiered on November 12, 2010 on Rihanna's Vevo channel on YouTube .

The music video begins with a view of New York City, followed by the first scene where Drake is talking to the cashier in a store. Rihanna then goes into business and immediately gets Drake's attention. She smiles at him and goes to a cold room where she gets a carton of milk. Drake follows her and starts rapping. He holds her hand, while she lets the milk carton fall onto the floor, which is wet from the milk. When Drake stops rapping, Rihanna shoves him and walks away with a smile on her face.

Next Rihanna starts singing, she walks down the street and dances. Passers-by have percussion instruments and play to the song, while scenes are shown where Rihanna and Drake are together in a bedroom, flirting and drinking champagne . The final scene of the music video shows Rihanna at a reggae- inspired night party in an alley. All the people who take part in the party have percussion instruments again and play the song, they form a circle. In the middle of the circle is a campfire and Rihanna singing and dancing for the audience. The music video ends with Drake kissing Rihanna's cheek in her bedroom.

criticism

Music critics received the song positively. MTV's Jocelyn Vena described it as "sassy" and "all about sex and love," as well as praising Drake's verse and chorus . About.com's Bill Lamb gave the song positive feedback, saying, “It does seem like another effortless hit on Rihanna's hands. This one glides along as perfect romantic ear candy. "

Live performances

Rihanna first performed the song on October 30, 2010 (excluding Drake) on Saturday Night Live . During the performance, she wore a bra that was compared to that of Rihanna's friend Katy Perry . On November 15, 2010, before the album was released, Rihanna sang What's My Name? for MTV's The Seven , Live in Times Square in New York City . A day later on November 16, 2010, Rihanna sang the song on The Late Show with David Letterman . On November 17, 2010, Rihanna gave an interview on Good Morning America and then sang the song. At the American Music Awards 2010 on November 21, 2010 Rihanna sang the song in a medley with her hits Love the Way You Lie (Part II) , What's My Name? and Only Girl (In the World) . In the UK , Rihanna appeared again in the finale, the seventh season of The X Factor, on December 11, 2010 , first singing her hit Unfaithful with finalist Matt Cardle , followed by a solo appearance on What's My Name? . The final saw over 15 million viewers and several thousand people complained a day later to the broadcaster about Rihanna's provocative clothes and outfit choices and about her sexual appearance. Vivienne Patterson, head of Mediawatch UK, said: "I think Rihanna didn't go overboard with her outfit and choice of clothes, it was still in the appropriate range." The British TV company Ofcom later stated that they had the appearances of Rihanna and Christina Aguilera investigate and analyze at the finale of The X Factor . Rihanna first sang the song with Drake at the 2011 Grammy Awards on February 13, 2011 .
