Work is a song by the Barbadian singer Rihanna in collaboration with the Canadian rapper Drake . It was released on January 27, 2016 as the lead single from Rihanna's eighth studio album Anti . The song reached number 1 in several singles charts and was nominated at the Grammy Awards 2017 in the categories Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo / Group Performance .

Work was written by Allen Ritter, Aubrey Graham , Jahron Anthony Brathwaite , Matthew Samuels, Monte Moir, R. Stephenson, Rihanna and Rupert Thomas, and produced by Boi-1da and Kuk Harrell. The mixing took Manny Marroquin, Noah Shebib and Noel Campbell. In the summer of 2015, Thomas, Ritter, Boi-1a and Mason, among others, met at Drake's house in Los Angeles , where they worked together for a few days and exchanged ideas. Thomas designed a dancehall- influenced beat and played this Boi-1da. This responded positively and had the idea of a old school dancehall - rhythm to resample . When the music for the song was finished, Boi-1da sent it to Brathwaite, who wrote the lyrics. After Drake heard the song, he decided to add a verse to it. Shortly afterwards, Brathwaite visited Rihanna at her Malibu home and played the song for her.
Rihanna's vocals were recorded by Marcos Tovar and Kuk Harrell at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles. Drake's rap art was recorded in Sandra Gale Studios in California and SOTA Studios in Toronto . The mastering was by Chris Gehringer at the Sterling Sound in New York City made. Work is after What's My Name? and Take Care is the third collaboration between Rihanna and Drake.

Billboard's Joe Lynch wrote that "the minimal production destroys expectations of a pop star releasing his long-delayed album."

Work was commercially successful and reached the top 10 of the single charts in many countries. The song entered the German single charts on January 29, 2016 at number 31. In the sixth week of the chart, the highest position was reached with position 5. The song stayed in these single charts until August 26th, i.e. 31 weeks. The song received another nomination at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2016 ( Best Song ).
Music video
Two music videos were recorded for Work . The first video was directed by Director X, and the recordings were made at The Real Jerk restaurant in Toronto . The second music video was shot by Tim Erem in Los Angeles . A compilation of both versions with a length of 7:34 minutes was released as the official music video. With YouTube video (as of March 2018) was viewed over 983 million times.
At the MTV Video Music Awards 2016 , the music video was nominated in the categories Best Female Video and Best Cooperation . The Time lists the music video for Work number 8 in the top 10 pop music videos 2016 .
