background

Rihanna

In an interview with MTV News on September 20, 2011, front man Chris Martin confirmed the recording of a song with Rihanna and that it would be on Coldplay's fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto . Martin went on to say that he wrote a song specifically for a collaboration with Rihanna and hopes she will decide to interpret it. He said, “We actually just wrote one song to see if Rihanna would sing it at all ... and then the rest of the band wanted to keep it, so we got the idea that she could really sing it with us. And to our great surprise, she said okay. ”Martin also confirmed that Princess of China was the band's favorite song on the album because it was so different from the band's previous genre. When asked if the fans would take the song positively, Martin replied that the band wouldn't worry about it and stated that with Rihanna you could always push the boundaries of the music industry. Martin also explained how he approached the singer about collaborating on the song: “The album is developed as a whole piece. It has a male and a female part, and Rihanna was at the top of our list for the female part, but it took me a while to have the courage to ask her. We had a gig in Las Vegas and I met her and said, "Do you think there's any chance?" I was very Hugh Grant- like and stuttered the whole time. "

On September 21, 2011, reports surfaced on the internet that Will Champion , the band's drummer, sang the part of Rihanna himself. Martin explained that there was no tension between the band members and Rihanna and said, “It's a bit of a love story and so we really needed someone who could sing higher than me. With any understanding of Will's intentions, he cannot do it. The part had to be sung by a woman. "

composition

Princess of China uses elements from the genres of synth-pop , alternative hip-hop and R&B . Amy Sciarretto of Popcrush says that the song has a “moody” and heavy synthesizer the whole time . The song contains falsetto vocal interludes from both Martin and Rihanna, which has been praised by several critics. MTV News’s Gil Kaufman noted that the falsetto vocals of the two were perfectly matched and that Martin’s falsetto perfectly complemented Rihann’s higher falsetto.
