background

For the naming, Coldplay said that they were based on a phrase that is on a drawing by the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo . The phrase is also a part of the title chosen for the album the song is on. Viva la Vida has its origins in Spanish and means something like "Long live life" or "Live life".

Coldplay hired Brian Eno , a British innovator , who co-founded Roxy Music and later a. a. had worked with U2 . He and second producer Markus Dravs also produced the entire album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends and also co-created Mylo Xyloto together .

Both influenced the sound of the song significantly, so Viva la Vida has an instrumental arrangement as well as curved texts with content from the Bible , e.g. B. “I hear Jerusalem bells”. The intricate composition includes orchestral bells, carillon and choral chants.

In August 2008, Coldplay released a second music video for the song in honor of Anton Corbijn and Depeche Mode . The music video pays homage to the music video for the song Enjoy the Silence .

Just a few minutes after its release, Viva la Vida became a chart hit. For several weeks the song occupied the top positions of the download portals iTunes and Musicload . In important music markets such as Germany , it brought Viva la Vida among the top five of the charts in the airplay charts even for six weeks at number one . Allegations of plagiarism

Since the song was released, Coldplay has been confronted with allegations of plagiarism. For example, American guitarist Joe Satriani claimed that Viva la Vida was based on his ballad If I Could Fly . An out-of-court settlement was reached with Joe Satriani.
