X&Y is the third studio album by the English pop rock band Coldplay . It was released in the middle of 2005 and followed the second album after almost three years.

background

As on their previous albums, Coldplay worked again with producer Ken Nelson . Production took 18 months. The album was recorded in eight different recording studios, including London , Liverpool , New York , Chicago and Los Angeles .

The band processed influences from Kraftwerk , David Bowie and Brian Eno on the album . Overall, the album is more electronic , but also more catchy and eccentric than its predecessors.

Cover

The Baudot code served as the basis for the album design

The album cover was designed by Tappin Gofton , who had already done covers for The Chemical Brothers . It is supposed to represent the album title X&Y in the Baudot code commonly used in telegraphy in the Murray variant (CCITT-2). The colors have no meaning.

The two outer columns show the coding for X (11101) and Y (10101), the two inner columns the toggle code (11011) for the special character mode and - according to today's understanding - the code for the & -sign (110 1 0 ), but the coding of the special characters was historically inconsistent. Since the switch back to letter mode (11111) is missing before the Y , it would have to be interpreted as a special character ('6') and the whole code consequently as X96 .

The dashed dividing line is reminiscent of the early Baudot code variant (CCITT-1), in which the 5-bit codes were divided into groups of 2 and 3 and used with the middle and index finger of the left hand and with the index finger. , Middle and ring fingers of the right hand were entered.

The respective title was visualized in the same way as a Baudot code on the covers of the six singles. It can also be found in the album's booklet.
