Parachutes (English for: " Parachutes ") is the debut album by the English band Coldplay and was released on July 10, 2000. It quickly reached the top of the UK album charts and stayed in the top 10 for 33 weeks. On the US Billboard 200 , the album reached number 51 and was sold over two million times. It has been questioned whether the album should be named after the successful song "Yellow", as Chris Martin mentioned in an interview with.
Shiver , Yellow , Trouble and Don't Panic were released as singles from the album . Parachutes reached # 14 on Channel 4's 100 Best Albums of All Time . In 2006, Parachutes took 33rd place in NME's 100 Best British Albums . In 2003, the album was voted # 25 by Q magazine readers . Still, singer Chris Martin said in a 2006 interview, "We know this is awful music and we'll always try to think about what we can do next."
Musical
The album is strongly influenced by alternative rock and is therefore often associated with the art rock band Radiohead from the time of their albums The Bends (1995) and OK Computer (1997). In fact, it was believed that the album's success was due to the fact that some Radiohead fans, who experimented heavily with electronic influences on their fourth album, Kid A (October 2000), turned away from their band and joined the music of Coldplay .
The music on Parachutes is mostly calm and level-headed, which is in stark contrast to the rock anthems that later dominated Coldplay's music , especially on the album X&Y . Most of the songs, such as High Speed , We Never Change and also the title track, are strongly influenced by acoustic guitars and piano melodies. Other songs like Shiver and Yellow use electric guitars.
The album's third song, Spies , caused a stir with the Chinese government, which interpreted the song as an anti-communist song. This meant that the album could not be sold in China. Commented guitarist Jon Buckland, “We were banned in China because of the song Spies . Very strange."
Just as excellent as the instrumental compositions are Chris Martin's singing, in which he often reaches falsetto . This is especially the case in the last song on the album, Everything's Not Lost , which begins as a piano ballad and later reaches a climax with Martin's harmonious falsetto singing. A hidden song called Life Is for Living follows shortly thereafter.
Trivia
- Much of the album was recorded at Liverpool Parr Street Studios within ten weeks. The recording work was only interrupted by two smaller tours by the band. The song High Speed was not recorded in Liverpool , but with provisional producer Chris Allison in the summer of 1999 at Oricoco Studios in London .
- The cover of Parachutes shows a photograph of a spinning light globe that the band bought for £ 10 from WHSmith and then shot with their own Kodak camera. He also appeared in the music videos for the songs Shiver and Don't Panic and also accompanied the band on their tours.
