BVMI was created in 2007 from the merger of the German representation of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), founded in 1958, and the Federal Association of the Phonographic Industry . He is a member of the European Movement Germany network . From 2007 to 2017 Dieter Gorny was chairman of the association.
The German Phono Academy , the cultural institute of the Federal Music Industry Association, hosted the Echo , Echo Klassik and Echo Jazz events , which will run until 2018 . Furthermore, the association commissions and controls the creation of the official German music charts via GfK and has databases of all winners of the Gold / Platinum / Diamond Awards, formerly the Golden Record . The BVMI publishes the official figures for the German music market every year in a yearbook Music Industry in Figures . In 2013, the BVMI launched the PLAYFAIR initiative to guide consumers in using music on the Internet .
The BVMI officially awards the awards for music sales and use for all sound carriers released after January 1, 1975 or for all audio and video carriers released after January 1, 2002. The record companies concerned must apply for the certifications; the awards are not automatically assigned.
