Until 2007, the federal association coordinated internal and external industry issues and maintained close contacts with political bodies, authorities , institutions, the mass media and the public. Concrete focus of work was, among other things, the determination of statistics, the results of which have been published, for example, since 1994 in the Yearbook of the Phonographic Economy . In addition, the Federal Association was responsible for the development of the system of the official German music charts and the review of the awards of gold and platinum audio and video carriers .

In addition to the association, there was also the German national group of the IFPI eV International Federation of the Phonographic Industry . Their focus was on the promotion of international relations and the preservation of national and international copyright law as well as the fight against the piracy of audio carriers.

The association merged in 2007 with the German section of the IFPI to form the Federal Association of the Music Industry .
