The German Phono Academy e. V. , based in Berlin, is an interest group of the sound carrier industry. It sees itself as a cultural institute of the German music industry.

history

On September 27, 1973 the academy was founded by 18 record companies of the Federal Association of the Phonographic Industry in West Berlin.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the record in 1987 , the German Phono Academy established the Emil Berliner Foundation to promote the next generation of musicians.

Board

The current board members are employees of the commercial music industry. An aesthetic independence is not given. The decision-making criteria are not published. The composition of the jury for the Echo-Klassik Prize was mostly not announced, but the current jury (as of April 2018) for the "Echo-Klassik - German Music Prize 2018" is presented on the website of the German Music Prize. There is no musicologist, no music critic and no well-known active musician on the jury.

activities

The association was the initiator and organizer of the Echo pop music prize , which was awarded annually in various categories from 1992 to 2018. The German Phono Academy itself awarded the Young Talent Prize to particularly promising young artists regardless of the sales figures determined. Echo Jazz and Echo Klassik awards were also presented in separate events . From 1974 to 1992 there was the award of the German Phono Academy, awarded in various categories, with an annual festival of the award winners.

With the SchoolTour , the Academy, together with the Federal Agency for Civic Education, has created a music pedagogical model project in which young people - especially at secondary schools and comprehensive schools - are familiarized with music productions and their socio-political backgrounds. You will write and compose your own songs (up to and including the production of a CD) and discuss cultural, economic and social backgrounds. They are accompanied by prominent musicians and representatives of the music industry. So far (as of 2007) these were u. a. Dieter Gorny , Gerd Gebhardt , Mousse T. , Roachford , die Prinzen , Kurtis Blow , TM Stevens . GEMA and GVL are also partners in this project .
