The Universal Music Group ( UMG ) is the largest of the three major labels alongside Sony Music and the Warner Music Group . It has the world's largest share of the music market with 32.8% in 2016.

It emerged in 1995 from the takeover of the Music Corporation of America (MCA) by Seagram and the acquisition of PolyGram in 1998. Universal Music has been a subsidiary of the French media group Vivendi since 2000 . Universal Music was originally the music label of the film studio Universal Pictures founded by Carl Lämmle .

The business field is divided into four areas: Recorded Music, Music Publishing & Artist Services and Merchandising.

Affiliated record labels

In November 2011 Universal Music bought the label EMI Music for 1.9 billion euros. In addition to the EMI Group, which also includes the record label Virgin Records , Universal Music currently includes the recording companies Capitol Records , Motown Record Company , Verve Music Group , Mercury Nashville, Interscope Records , Island Def Jam Records , Republic Records , Polydor , Urban, Koch International and Deutsche Grammophon .

Classical music publishers in the group

Universal Music GmbH, the German subsidiary of the Universal Music Group, relocated its German headquarters in 2002 from Hamburg to Berlin - Friedrichshain to the Eierkühlhaus . The managing director of Universal Music GmbH has been Frank Briegmann since July 1, 2004 . His predecessor, Tim Renner, left the company in early 2004. Frank Briegmann has not only been Managing Director of Universal Music Germany since June 15, 2010, but also President of Universal Music Austria, Universal Music Switzerland, the Nordic countries and Eastern Europe as well as Deutsche Grammophon. Universal Music Germany took over the majority of the Berlin merchandise company Bravado Merchandise GmbH in November 2007.
