The BossHoss is a seven-piece band from Berlin, founded in 2004 . The group had their breakthrough in 2005 with interpretations of pop songs in country music style. Rhythm guitarist Hoss Power now writes most of the band's songs himself, as well as their most commercially successful single Don't Gimme That to date . The origin of the band name can be found in the song Boss Hoss published by The Sonics in 1965 .

history

2004 to 2006 - founding phase

The band was founded in 2004 by the two commercial graphic artists Sascha Vollmer and Michael Frick , who had already played together at Hot Boogie Chillun, with their colleague Alec Völkel in Berlin. The band had their first appearance in the Berlin Bassy Cowboy Club . After that she only played at private parties and in small Berlin clubs; At the end of 2004 they signed their first major record deal with Universal Music . In 2004 they covered the commercial song Like Ice in the Sunshine for Langnese ice cream , after which Frick left the band and was replaced by Guss Brooks. The first single Hey Ya was released in April 2005, followed by the release of their debut album Internashville Urban Hymns in May of the same year . The album rose to number 11 in the album charts in Germany; the band played 182 concerts in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands. In 2006 the band contributed the score for FC Venus - Attack is the best defense .

In April 2006 the first single I Say a Little Prayer from the album Rodeo Radio was released , which was released on May 19, 2006 and half of it contains original compositions. On the album, Russ T. Nail replaced the old lead guitarist Boris "Russ" Kontorowski. In 2006 the band was on tour with 150 concerts. For the release of the second album Rodeo Radio , the debut album Internashville Urban Hymns returned to the charts one year after its release and reached gold status at the end of May 2006 with 100,000 CDs sold . In December 2006, the second album Rodeo Radio was also awarded gold.

2007 to 2011 - new line-up

The year 2007 began with a tour through Canada , during which the two new band members Hank Williamson and Russ T. Rocket could be seen live for the first time; it was followed by the release of the single EP Everything Counts / Truck 'n' Roll Rules . The video for it comes from director Detlev Buck , whose first children's film Hands Off Mississippi The BossHoss contributed the title song. At the end of the year the second single Monkey Business and the third album Stallion Battalion were released , mostly with their own compositions.

The fourth studio album Do or Die was released on June 19, 2009. The first single, Last Day , was released on June 5, 2009. The band then played at the heavy metal festival Wacken Open Air . In November 2009 she was with her tour Go! Go! Go! on the road in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In the same year the band played a cover version of the David Bowie song Heroes / Helden together with Gunter Gabriel , which is on Gabriel's album Sohn aus dem Volk. German Recordings was released.

In 2010 the band was on tour again; their album Low Voltage , which is a best-of album with three new titles, was released on April 23, 2010. On the Low Voltage tour, the band got reinforcements from the brass group Tijuana Wonderbrass and the Babelsberg film orchestra still touring with the band. In June 2011 the band played at the Rock im Park and Rock am Ring festivals .

Since 2011 - The Voice of Germany

The BossHoss

From autumn 2011 to winter 2013 Burns and Power shared a jury seat on the casting show The Voice of Germany for the first three seasons . The album Liberty of Action , which was also released that fall, reached number four in the German album charts , while the single Don't Gimme That was eighth, the first top 10 position that The BossHoss had achieved in the single charts by then. Do not Gimme That took first place in the Austrian charts. LOVE , originally by Nat King Cole , was also used for the soundtrack for the film Rubbeldiekatz by Detlev Buck and was released as a single that also made it into the charts. After Boss Burns and Hoss Power's protégé, Ivy Quainoo , won The Voice of Germany , the band performed I Say a Little Prayer live with her . On January 5th, 2013 they appeared as a special guest at the first DEL Winter Game in the Nuremberg Stadium .

In spring 2014 the band released the single My Personal Song and toured Australia. They were the first German band to play at the Soundwave Festival . In April 2015, Baumhaus Verlag published the children's book The BossHoss - Little Cowboys Big , which Power and Burns conceived together with Daniel Ernle. In addition, the band split from their long-time manager that year. In September 2015, the group released their seventh studio album Dos Bros . For the first time, the band reached number one in the German and Austrian album charts. At the beginning of 2017, Völkel and Vollmer took on the role of host in the fourth season of the VOX show Sing my song - the exchange concert . You have been part of the jury for The Voice of Germany spin-off The Voice Senior since 2018 . In 2019 they were coaches for the seventh season of The Voice Kids . Since May 2020 Vollmer and Völkel have been moderating the game show Mole - Who can you trust? on Sat. 1.

Other activities of the band members

The BossHoss are involved in the production, mixing, recording, arrangement, sound engineering and graphic design of their publications. In addition to his role as rhythm guitarist and singer, Hoss Power is also the main composer of the band; he took over the production, the arrangement, the recording and the mixing for each album. Boss Burns took over the graphic design of all albums, Guss Brooks took over the sound engineering since the album Low Voltage . Power and Ernesto Escobar de Tijuana recorded the radio sequences from Rodeo Radio . With de Tijuana and Williamson, other band members were also involved in the songwriting in addition to the main composer Power . Frank Doe takes on the setlisting for live shows.

Most of the band members are involved in side projects, such as Guss Brooks with The 2930s, who also supports The BossHoss with this side project, and Boss Burns with Tehran Taxi . Power, Doe and de Tijuana worked as composers, arrangers, mixers, sound designers and producers in the tanning studio in Berlin for bands and companies such as McDonald’s , BMW and Tchibo . They produce advertisements and albums; The BossHoss publications were also produced here. In 2014 the band moved into their new studio, Internashville . The BossHoss was on many other television shows.

The band members often appear in undershirts or denim shirts, as well as white stetsons , western boots and sunglasses . In addition, the two front men Burns and Power wear several rings, with their left hands forming the words BOSS and HOSS with four rings. An important element of all live performances is the surfing of percussionist de Tijuana on a board over the crowd. The band is committed to learning to read and write. As part of the “iCHANCE” campaign, which is carried out by the Federal Association for Literacy and Basic Education , Hoss Power and Hank Williamson are involved in videos against illiteracy, addressing difficulties and encouraging those affected. Since the beginning of the band you have also been involved in the project “Sage”, which collects money for medication to support a children's hospital in Senegal. They appear regularly at the association's benefit events and make calls for donations.
