Federal Association for Literacy and Basic Education

The Federal Association for Literacy and Basic Education e. V. is a non-profit German association that helps illiterate adults learn to read and write , and through public relations work tries to emphasize the United Nations' demand for basic education (as part of the UN Decade of Literacy 2003–2012) in German-speaking countries .

In 2006 it was named “Landmark in the Land of Ideas ”. The association is based in Münster (Westphalia) . The association has had an office in Berlin since 2018 .

The Federal Association for Literacy and Basic Education is a nationwide specialist, service and lobby institution. 500 people or institutions are members of the recognized non-profit association. The association's work is financed by membership fees, donations and sales proceeds.

history

  • 1984 Foundation of the association as a writing workshop for new readers and writers e. V.
  • 1997 Merger with the Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft Alphabetisierung e. V. to the Federal Association for Literacy e. V.
  • 2006 Renaming to the Federal Association for Literacy and Basic Education e. V.

At the end of 2011, the then Federal Minister for Education and Research, Annette Schavan , together with the then President of the Conference of Ministers of Education, Bernd Althusmann , launched the "National Strategy for Adult Literacy and Basic Education in Germany". Alongside other partners, the Federal Association for Literacy and Basic Education is actively involved in the implementation of the national strategy. In 2016, Federal Education Minister Johanna Wanka announced the transfer of the “National Strategy” into a “National Decade for Adult Literacy and Basic Education in Germany 2016–2026” (short name: AlphaDekade 2016–2026). The federal government intends to invest at least 180 million euros over a period of 10 years to noticeably reduce functional illiteracy in Germany. Within the AlphaDekade, the Bundesverband Alphabetisierung und Grundbildung e. V. together with other social actors, partners of the federal and state governments.

  • Promote reading and writing by adults
  • Optimization of the existing range of courses for those unfamiliar with reading and writing
  • Motivation of those affected to use learning opportunities
  • Support for the people and institutions involved in literacy and basic education work
  • Lobbying and advice for those who do not know how to read and write
  • Informing the public about the causes, backgrounds and effects of functional illiteracy
  • Strengthening and activation of those affected
