Echo award 2014
The 23rd Echo Award of the German Phono Academy took place on March 27, 2014 in the Berlin exhibition center. The gala was moderated for the second time by Helene Fischer and broadcast on the television station Das Erste . With 4.21 million viewers (15% of the television viewers that evening), the show reached the highest number since the broadcast switched to ARD in 2009.
Controversy in advance
After the nominees had been announced, the band Jennifer Rostock announced that they would boycott the award ceremony, as Frei.Wild had been nominated in the category “Artist / Group / Collaboration Rock / Alternative national”. In advance, a newly formed advisory board had decided that the band could be nominated. On March 20, 2014, the Bildzeitung published a statement by Frei.Wild, which in turn declared a boycott of the award ceremony. The reason given by the band was that the organizers were not ready to talk about the cancellation of the nomination at the 2013 awards ceremony , which the band believed was a “bottomless mess”. Frei.Wild described the award ceremony as “hypocritical, hypocritical and actually doomed until those responsible can muster the courage to stand by [...] his mistakes, learn from them and the damage caused in an appropriate manner to make amends ”.
