biography

childhood

Robin Thicke was born in Los Angeles in March 1977 as the second child of the Canadian actor and songwriter Alan Thicke and the American singer and soap actress Gloria Loring . Influenced by the careers of both parents, he already had guest appearances at the age of twelve in television series such as the 1960s drama Wonderful Years or the sitcom Our Loud Home . Although both father and mother supported him in his plan, Thicke decided a little later to turn away from acting. At 16, he finally met André Hall, the chairman of Interscope Records , who Thicke offered a record deal with the Nu America Records sub-label. Although he first time in 1996 on the soundtrack to Demi Moore film Striptease be heard, however, he set out in the following years, primarily as a songwriter for Brandy , Michael Jackson , Mýa , Usher , Pink , Christina Aguilera or Mary J. Blige a name .

At the age of 14, Thicke met Paula Patton , who was around a year older and is now a well-known actress. The two had been married since 2005 and have had a son since April 6, 2010. On February 24, 2014, the couple announced their separation. Patton filed for divorce on October 9, 2014, which ended in March 2015. Two months later, Thicke appeared in public for the first time at the Cannes International Film Festival with his new partner April Love Geary (* 1994). In December 2016, Thicke's father died, in November 2018 his villa burned down in Malibu in California in a forest fire .

Music career

Thicke (2008)

In 2000 Thicke finally began recording his debut album Cherry Blue Skies . Two years later, when I Get You Alone was released in June 2002, the first single from the neo-soul- inspired long player was released. The song, based on Beethoven's 5th Symphony , developed into a global chart success and reached number 29 in the USA and number 17 in Australia. In the course of the success, Interscope and Nu America Records decided to re-release the album, which was finally released again in 2003 under the name A Beautiful World - including some new recordings. Despite a second single ( Brand New Jones ), the album was hardly commercially successful.

After further collaborations with Will Smith and rapper Lil Wayne , Thicke finally moved from Nu America to Pharrell Williams ' Star Trak Records in 2005 . From the joint studio time with Williams and co-producer Chad Hugo, the single Wanna Love U Girl emerged in the same year . Although the mid-tempo track was initially only released in English-speaking countries and was only successful on radio air, it was even released a second time as a remix with Busta Rhymes the following year .

Thicke's second album The Evolution of Robin Thicke was released on October 3, 2006 in North America . The record has sold more than 900,000 copies so far and helped Thicke to achieve a commercial breakthrough in Australia. In the dance film Stomp the Yard , released in mid-2007, alongside Ne-Yo , he can be seen again as an actor for the first time. He can be heard in a song on the album Curtis des rapper 50 Cent . On the soundtrack to the film Valentine's Day he can be heard together with the singer Leighton Meester in the song Somebody to Love .

In 2013, Thicke released Blurred Lines , which he co- wrote and produced with Pharrell Williams . Blurred Lines, in German: blurry borders, refers to sex with a drunk who is consensual from the singers' point of view, but in view of the very harsh and rough description clearly indicates sexual abuse. Many musicians then criticized both Thicke and the rest of the music industry for sexism and the frequent portrayal of women as sex objects. Despite this criticism, the single developed into his most commercially successful hit to date and reached number 1 in the charts in Germany , Switzerland and Great Britain . The success of the single is due, among other things, to the fact that the song was used for a Beats by Dr. Dre was used. The accompanying music video also caused a stir due to the freedom of movement of the female protagonists. In March 2015, however, an American court ruled that the song was largely a plagiarism of Got to Give It Up by Marvin Gaye , to whose heirs Thicke and Williams had to pay a total of 7.4 million dollars.

In July 2014, the album Paula was released , which Thicke dedicated to his ex-wife Paula Patton. In the UK, however, the album was sold just under 500 times in the first week of sales, in Australia just under 160 times, and in the USA the album sold a total of just under 25,000 times.

Since January 2019, Thicke has been a juror for the US version of The Masked Singer .
