Life

Mýa was born on October 10, 1979 in Washington, DC to an African American and a half-Italian woman. She started taking dance lessons when she was three years old. At the age of 15 she started giving dance lessons. When she was 16, she made a brief appearance on television for the first time.

Career

In 1997 she signed her first recording deal with Haqq Islam's University Records with the help of befriended R&B group Dru Hill . In collaboration with the band, they created their self-titled debut album Mýa , which entered the top 30 of the American album charts after its release in the summer of 1998 and was in three of them with “It's All About Me”, “Movin 'on” and “My First Night with You” Charts produced successful single releases. At the same time Mýa sang the chorus of Pras' first solo single "Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are)", which gave her additional popularity, especially in Europe. In the same year she had another chart success with Mase , BLACKstreet with the song "Take Me There".

Mýa (2003)

In the spring of 2000 Mýa released her second album Fear of Flying . The first single "Best of Me", with a guest appearance by Jadakiss , was hardly well received in the USA. The second single "Case of the Ex" was more successful and marks Mýa's biggest US chart success. The continued success of the album, which sold more than five million copies worldwide, prompted Interscope Records to re-release the CD, which was released a second time in the same year with a few new songs and including the third single "Free".

In 2001 Missy Elliott asked her to sing the Patti LaBelle classic " Lady Marmalade " again alongside Christina Aguilera , Pink and Lil 'Kim . The soundtrack to the box office success Moulin Rouge stormed the charts worldwide and developed into the most successful single of the year over the course of the summer months. The individual members of the quartet received unprecedented interest in their person and private life from the press and the public. In 2002 they received a Grammy for their work . In the same year Mýa had her first appearance as an actress with a supporting role in the film adaptation of the musical Chicago .

With Mood Ring in July 2003 their third studio album followed. The CD sold over two million copies and achieved great success with number 3 in the US album charts and number 7 in Germany. The two single releases "My Love Is Like ... Woah" and "Fallen" also reached the charts, but were a little less successful than the singles from the previous album.

Also in 2003 she sang the title song Everything or nothing for the computer game 007 - Alles oder Nothing .

Mýa played a little later in the films Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights and May I ask? alongside Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez .

In 2007 Dr. Dre , Lil Jon and Kwame produced album Liberation on the market. From the album, which did not make it into the charts, three singles were released. Mýa then released the album Sugar & Spice in 2008 only in Japan. In early 2009 Mýa started on her new album Beauty and the Streets , which was released in September 2009 as a mixtape with remixes. It reached number 55 in the American R&B album charts. The single show Me Something , a duet with rapper Bun B , was released in August .

Mýa was a vegetarian for a long time. Today she is vegan for health and ethical reasons.
