MTV Video Music Awards

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) have been presented by the US MTV since 1984 . Together with the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA), it is the most important MTV awards ceremony internationally . The event lasts about three hours and takes place either in late August or early September. From 1984 to 1998 the awards ceremonies were held in Los Angeles . Then MTV changed the scene and took place from 1999 to 2003 in New York alternately in the Radio City Music Hall and the Metropolitan Opera . In 2004 and 2005, the VMAs were held in Miami . After criticism and a decline in interest, the broadcaster decided to broadcast the award ceremony from its original location. There are around 20 categories and around 15 live performances by well-known stars each year.

In 2009 the MTV Video Music Awards celebrated their 25th anniversary. The corresponding event was opened by Britney Spears . The trophy, which depicts an astronaut on the moon with an MTV flag, is nicknamed Moonman . The MTV Video Music Awards should not be confused with the sometimes fun MTV Movie Awards .

In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for the first time in its history , the VMA will not take place inside an event building, but as an open-air performance in order to ensure legal health guidelines.

Legendary appearances

The VMAs often make distinctive appearances. So did the appearance of the band Nirvana in 1992. The band wanted to play Rape Me , the broadcaster called for Smells Like Teen Spirit . They agreed on lithium . But when Nirvana came on stage, they played the first few bars of Rape Me before moving on to Lithium . During the performance, bassist Krist Novoselić's amplifier failed , he threw the instrument in the air and got it right in the face. Leaving the stage, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain caused a scandal when he spat on Elton John's piano because he thought Axl Rose was playing on it. The two singers had previously quarreled in the trailer park. Nirvana later received the Best Alternative Video award for Smells Like Teen Spirit . However, the broadcaster had engraved Smells Like Te on the trophy on the Spirit .

In 1998, Tré Cool , drummer for the band Green Day , tried to climb the ball in front of Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.

Also provocative was the appearance of Madonna , Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the VMAs 2003, during which there was a kiss between Britney Spears and Madonna and between Madonna and Christina Aguilera during the performance. Britney and Madonna's "The Kiss" went down in pop history.

Lady Gaga also caused a scandal at the VMAs in 2009. When she performed her globally successful song Paparazzi , she suddenly stood screaming and with a blood-smeared upper body on stage, which made headlines around the world. Also in 2009, while Taylor Swift was accepting her award for Best Female Video and delivering her acceptance speech, Kanye West jumped on stage, interrupted her, and snatched the microphone from her. Then he said Beyoncé made one of the best videos of all time with Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) . Taylor Swift was shocked and Beyoncé also looked shocked. West was booed by the audience for his failure. West's behavior was criticized even by President Barack Obama on a television show.

At the VMAs in 2013, Miley Cyrus made global headlines with her appearance. First she presented her own song We Can't Stop , in which she made shocked faces in the audience with tongue rolls, lascivious grips on the vulva and her swimsuit with cartoon characters imprint. When singer Robin Thicke performed his hit Blurred Lines , she danced provocatively around in flesh-colored underwear: Cyrus seemed to satisfy himself with a foam finger , fingered the singer's fly with it and performed various sex poses.
